Dear CES,

This was an exciting week at CES! It is best expressed in a song.

On the fourth week of May the CES students had (feel free to sing along):

  • 5 Days of School
  • 4 Grades had Field Day
  • 3 SOLs
  • 2 Trout Releases

                       &

  • 1 Patriotic Performance

Please remember to bring your driver's license with you if you plan to attend any end of the year events at CES. It is required to check-in as a visitor in our school. Thank you for your continued support around student safety.

This past weekend our three GMU interns graduated. We are so grateful for their efforts this year. They have been such a positive aspect of CES. Also, our wonderful Girls on the Run students, buddy runners, and coaches completed their 5k race. They all did an amazing job!

STUDENT'S INTENTION FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR forms have been sent home. Please complete and send them back to school by Friday, June 1. We appreciate your support with this.

We have had a few students come to the clinic with ticks on them. As we get into Tick season, we wanted to share the below information sheet with you.

End of Year Medication Reminder

The school health room reminds parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school.  Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded.  It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian.  Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

If your child will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, your existing long-term medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program.  Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

If you have any questions, please contact the health room at 703.502.3510, or your school public health nurse, Cindy McKee, RN, at 202.578.3745.

SOL TESTING IS HERE

Students in grades 3-6 in our school will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests between May 7th and June 8th. It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your child have a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing. The Virginia Department of Education requires students in grades 3-8 across the state to take the SOL tests. SOL tests measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills detailed in the Virginia Standards of Learning. Content areas that will be tested are shown for each grade level below.

  • 5/29 - 5th Grade Science
  • 5/30 - 3rd Grade Math
  • 5/31 - 4th Grade Virginia Studies

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is National Mental Health Awareness month. While the majority of our students thrive and are resilient, all students can struggle at times with emotional and behavioral issues that can affect their learning and overall wellness. Schools are often the place where these kinds of issues, as well as other mental health needs, are discovered and where school-based supports can be provided. FCPS wants all parents and guardians to know that your school psychologist, school social worker, and school counselor are available for consultation and support on concerns such as anxiety, peer relationships, stress, depression or other social and emotional issues. They can also provide a list of private and community-based mental health resources. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s school to connect with a member of the student services team. Click on the following link to learn about resources and ways to foster resilience in your child.
