Decision Day

On May 1, Hayfield Student Services hosted their 4th annual Decision Day, an annual event celebrating seniors and their postsecondary plans. Seniors were encouraged to wear their college, career, or military shirt and sign a banner in the cafeteria indicating their college or career plans. Photo opportunities and dance music added to the celebratory atmosphere. The signed banner will be hung in the office lobby on graduation day for families to view.

This year two teams from Hayfield Secondary School earned the privilege to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, PA from May 14-18 where both teams shined.

David Toomer, a junior at Hayfield, received a scholarship to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia for $9,250 per year for four years during the special awards ceremony for his project, “Augmenting Gaseous Adsorption Capabilities via Nanoporous Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Frameworks (CD-MOF) Synthesized with Alkali Coordinating Ions.”

The sophomore team of Miamar Burgos-Rosario, Saijai Supanklang, and Sarah Syed were awarded Third Place and a prize of $1000 in their category of Plant Sciences for their project “Cyanofertilization: A Comparative Analysis of Biological and Environmental Impacts.”

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), a program of Society for Science & the Public (the Society), is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition.  Each year, approximately 1,800 high school students from more than 75 countries, regions, and territories are awarded the opportunity to showcase their independent research and compete for an average $4 million in prizes.  The journey begins each year with millions of students worldwide competing in local and school-sponsored science fairs; the winners of these events going on to participate in Society-affiliated regional and state fairs from which the best win the opportunity to attend Intel ISEF.  Intel ISEF unites these top young scientific minds, showcasing their talents on an international stage, where doctoral level scientists review and judge their work.  We are extremely proud of our Hawks and look forward to watching them continue to shine within the sciences here at Hayfield!
