News You Choose May 21- June 1
Way to go! Congratulations to Gurpavitar Singh, Danayit Gerensie and Rachelle Quispe who participated in the Voices of Now festival. The group received many praises and did an amazing job in their performance!
SOL Season has Begun: We are in the midst of SOL testing. Staff members have facilitated SOL bootcamp and review sessions during and after school. Our testing coordinators have worked diligently to put together a schedule for our students in order to get everyone tested successfully. Our expectation is that no electronics will be in our testing locations. However, students are encouraged to bring a book to read. There is some additional information below on SOL testing and things you can do to assist your child with testing readiness.
May 11-24:SOLs The Standards of Learning (SOL) tests at Key Middle School will take place between May 11th to May 24th. It will be very helpful if you can avoid appointments which may take your child out of school during this time period. Testing is untimed so once your child begins testing we cannot interrupt their testing. Also, please ensure that your child has a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and comes to school on time throughout this testing window. If you know that your child will be absent for one or more of their scheduled tests please contact your child’s counselor.
This year the SOL non-writing window will overlap with Ramadan, the Muslim holy month marked by daily fasting from sunrise to sunset. If a parent/guardian of a student who will be observing Ramadan would like to request for their child to test at the beginning of the spring SOL window (May 7-15) in order to avoid testing during the holiday, please contact your child’s counselor.

JUNE 1- Library :Every student came through the library in the last two weeks for book checkout and they learned the following information that I would like you to please reiterate:
1. All books are due on JUNE 1
2. Any book that is not turned in by June 1 is considered lost and I have to send a bill home
3. So please turn in books by June 1
4. They can turn them in downstairs in the red book drop or in the hallway upstairs outside of the library
If students have lost a book, please tell them it’s time to face the music. They have options!
1. They can pay for the lost book
2. They can replace the lost book by purchasing a new copy of that same book at Amazon, Walmart, etc
3. They can read off their missing book at a rate of $5 per hour. Reading logs are in the library and are due by JUNE 1
If a student decides to not deal with their lost materials, they are not allowed to get a locker as an 8th grade student until they pay for or replace their missing book. Rising 9th graders will have their missing books stay on their record when they go to high school.

Mental Health Awareness Month: Ways to Help at Home Part 1
1. The first rule of caring for your child's emotional or behavior struggles is that there are no rules. Parenthood doesn’t come with a manual and there will be a lot of trial and error as you figure out what works best to help your child.
2. Pick your battles. Ask yourself if this specific behavior is doing any harm, or if it’s just annoying—annoying probably isn’t worth arguing over. If you do get in an argument with your child, resist the urge to raise your voice. Be matter-of-fact and stand your ground.
3. Cover the basics. Before you dismiss your child's outburst as a lack of control, ask yourself if there is a simple explanation for what’s going on. Are they hungry or thirsty? Are they too hot or cold? Are they overstimulated? Did they get enough sleep? Are they feeling under the weather (i.e.- cold, allergies, headache, or an upset stomach)?
4. Environment matters. Do your best to create a home that is low on stress, safe, and supportive. A “Mary Poppins”-type household would be great, but let’s get real. If you and your significant other get in an argument, keep it away from the kids. Give reasonable timelines for getting chores done. Praise your child for the things they do well and let them know that you love them.
5. Encourage communication. Let your child know that they can talk to you about their thoughts, feelings, or difficult situations they’re dealing with. When they do come to you, really listen to what they have to say. You may not agree or understand, but you need to accept that the difficulties they are having are very real to them. Think about things you struggled with when you were their age. Check out our mental health conversation starters.
6. Timing is everything. In stressful situations, allow your child some space and address issues later when they have regained control over themselves, otherwise you’re basically pouring gasoline on a fire

Tomorrow's Women in Science and Technology (TWIST): Our club hosts an annual event called TJ Techstravaganza, a free, STEM fair that attracts thousands of visitors from the DMV area each year. Each year, we have over 300 TJ student volunteers and over a dozen exhibiting companies who help us make this event possible. There will be over 50 exciting labs ranging from Banana DNA to Stomp Rockets to Making Ice Cream! You can also check out our website or Facebook for more information.
This year, the event will be on Saturday, May 19th from 10 AM - 4 PM at TJHSST (6560 Braddock Rd Alexandria, VA). This past year, we had over 2900 visitors from over 192 different schools, and we were hoping to enlist your help in making it even bigger this year. This can be done through advertising our event by putting up flyers (which we’ve translated into multiple languages) in your facility or mentioning it to parents and children.
Our mission is to provide STEM resources to elementary and middle schoolers who lack them. This is why tickets are free and are only used for calculating how much of each material we need to buy! To purchase tickets, you can register on our Eventbrite page to help speed up the sign in process at the event. We are extremely passionate about what we do and are dedicated to making Techstrav an opportunity available for any and every student.
