Floris Friday Message

Verna
We wish Mrs. Greene all the best as she retires to her childhood home at Virginia Beach.

Dear Families,

We are off and running with SOL assessments that began on Tuesday with all grade levels taking the Reading SOL this week.  We know our students are well prepared, and will show their stuff on these tests that continue for the next few weeks.  As a reminder to parents of students in 3rd through 6th grades, it would be very helpful if you do not schedule appointments or other activities on the days of your child’s SOL tests.

While we love this period in which we begin to celebrate our accomplishments, there is always a little sadness about what the end of the year will bring.  For some, it means separating from friends for a few weeks; for others it means uncertainty of changing to a new grade; for us, it means we will say goodbye to a few special friends who have been with us for quite some time. In this, and our next few KITs, we pay tributes to Verna Marie Greene, Jessica Teets (SACC Supervisor), Dr. Cheri Collins, Judy Hasson, Suzanne Bourscheid, Courtney Bavis and Christine Silfies who will be beginning new adventures next year.

To begin with, we’d like to honor Verna Marie Greene.  Mrs. Greene has been an educator for twenty-five years, with the last 13 years as part of our 1st grade team here at Floris.  She has instilled the love of reading in countless students and has provided a warm, nurturing environment in her classroom.  We wish her all the best as she retires to her childhood home at Virginia Beach, where she will enjoy sailing, biking and time with her grandchildren, family and friends.

We also say good-bye to Jessica Teets, our SACC Center Supervisor. Mrs. Teets has been our SACC Center supervisor for the last 11 years. Her kind and gentle demeanor along with her dedication to our students before and after school and during the summer programs has made our SACC program one of the best in the county. Jessica, her husband, and daughter are looking forward to being closer to family and enjoying a less hectic life in West Virginia.  We wish Jessica and her family all the best as she starts her new adventure at The Grafton School.

Have a great weekend - we hope the rain will end soon.

Sincerely,

Gail Porter, Principal and Dave Gerstner, Assistant Principal

Class Placement for 2018-2019

If you have information to share regarding your childs placement, please email Mrs. Porter at Parent_input@fcps.edu by May 31st.  (Note, there is an underscore after ‘Parent’ and before ‘input’).

Please remember that we do not take requests for specific teachers as we base our decisions on individual student strengths and instructional needs. As a note for you to be aware, grade level assignments for staff are sometimes modified due to late enrollments, unforeseen changes, and other considerations.  Staff assignments are determined at the end of the summer.  Staff members have been directed not to give out information about student placement in order to eliminate last minute surprises when changes have to be made due to staffing issues.

Rising 6th Grader? Immunization Requirement

Will your child be a sixth grader next year?  If so, they most likely will need a booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis). Sixth grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of having had the Tdap booster. Parents or guardians of current fifth graders, please check your child’s immunization records and make arrangements with your doctor for the immunization.  Documentation confirming receipt of the vaccination must be turned into the office.

We said good-bye to Jessica Teets, our SACC Center Supervisor
