This week, we hosted a volunteer appreciation breakfast. It was a small token of thanks for all the time and love our volunteers give to us at Weyanoke. Thank you. Volunteers!

Why is it important to learn Computer Science? Is technology a field just for boys or nerds? Do people who work in the field of computer science have fun? This workshop tackles the stereotypes associated with the language of Computer Science and highlights the growling need to educate ourselves in the field. In addition, the workshop introduces attendees to the basic concepts of computer science, presents a video of interviews with girls and women in technology in the northern VA area, and provides an opportunity for interaction with the presenter through hands-on activities and sing-alongs!

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the
health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of
school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy
that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home
with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may
transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.
Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online. A
medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to
be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders are clear. All information on the form must
be completed. Part I must be signed and dated by the parent or guardian. Part II must be
signed and dated by your physician. Over-the-counter medication given for headache, muscle
pain, orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps and antibiotic or anti-viral medication do not need a
physician signature. More detailed information is available on the back of the medication
authorization form.
Over-the-counter medication must be in the original container and clearly labeled by the parent or
guardian. All prescription medication, including physician’s samples, must be labeled by the
pharmacist or physician. Please make sure that the label clearly states your student’s name, the
name of the medication, the dosage of the medication, and the time interval for administration.
If your child will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools,
your existing long-term medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program.
Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

May is National Mental Health Awareness month. While the majority of our students thrive and are
resilient, all students can struggle at times with emotional and behavioral issues that can affect their
learning and overall wellness. Schools are often the place where these kinds of issues, as well as other
mental health needs, are discovered and where school-based supports can be provided.
FCPS wants all
parents and guardians to know that your school psychologist, school social worker, and school counselor
are available for consultation and support on concerns such as anxiety, peer relationships, stress,
depression or other social and emotional issues. They can also provide a list of private and community-based
mental health resources.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s school
to connect with a member of the student services team. Click on the following links to learn about
resources and ways to foster resilience in your child. Mental Health and Resiliency, Healthy Minds Blog,

It is time to register your child for kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year.
If your child will be five (5) years old on or before September 30, 2018 (which means your child was born on or before September 30, 2018), then he/she should be enrolled in kindergarten for this coming fall. Weyanoke Elementary School offers a full day kindergarten program.
The required enrollment forms have been sent to your home. They may also be accessed on the web at www.fcps.edu . Scroll to the bottom of the page and then click on “Register Your Child”. You may fill out the forms on-line and print the completed forms. Please bring them with you to register because enrollment cannot be processed over the internet.
If your child needs to have a physical examination or immunizations, please schedule them before you return the forms, if possible. Physicals must be dated after August 24, 2017. Current Head Start/FECEP students are required to have a new physical if the last one is dated before August 24, 2017. Students will not be permitted to attend school until all documentation is complete.
A list of additional documents to bring with you to registration is also enclosed. You must present an original birth certificate and medical records. Your lease must be current and include the manager’s signature as well as your own.
You may bring the information in Monday through Friday between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Appointments are not required, but are recommended.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to call (703) 813-5400 #2. We look forward to meeting you and hope you are excited about the new adventure your child is about to begin.

The Family and Early Childhood Education Program (FECEP)/Head Start is a full-day program that primarily serves children who are four years old by September 30. There are limited spaces available in select schools for children who are three years old by September 30.
If your family qualifies for free or reduced-price school lunch or you are currently receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, you are eligible to apply. Enrollment is based on need; it is not based on a first-come, first-served basis.
Learn more about FECEP/Head Start.
If yes, he or she may need a booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis). Sixth grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of the Tdap booster. Parents or guardians should ask their private healthcare provider, or the health department, to review their child’s immunization record if they are unsure if their child has received the Tdap booster.
Students who have received a Tdap booster between the ages of seven and eleven do not need another dose. Documentation must be provided to the school student information assistant (SIA) or registrar as soon as possible.
Learn more about the Tdap booster.
Later this school year, students in grades 3 through 5 will be participating in the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. The tests are closely aligned with the curriculum at each grade level, and teachers prepare students every day with the skills and information they will need to succeed. The dates for this year's SOL tests are as follows:
- May 17-18 - 3rd grade Math SOL
- May 21 - SOL make-up day
- May 22-23 - 5th grade Math SOL
- May 24 - 4th grade Social Studies (Virginia Studies) SOL
- May 29 - 4th grade Math SOL
- May 30 - 5th grade Science SOL
- May 31 - June 1 - SOL make-up days
The schedule is subject to change based on the needs of students and faculty. All changes will be announced well in advance.
Fairfax County Public Schools has a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy that
encourages students to use their own personal electronic devices (such as
laptops, tablets, and cell phones) during the school day to enhance learning.
At the same time, FCPS has an obligation to guarantee a secure test environment
during Standards of Learning (SOL) testing.
The Virginia Department of Education requires that schools
restrict student access to cell phones and other personal electronic devices
during SOL tests. These restrictions are designed to maintain test security and
to minimize potential distractions while students are taking tests.
View these tips to help your child avoid SOL testing
issues related to personal electronic devices.
