Mental Health Awareness Month

May is National Mental Health Awareness month. While the majority of our students thrive and are resilient, all students can struggle at times with emotional and behavioral issues that can affect their learning and overall wellness. Schools are often the place where these kinds of issues, as well as other mental health needs, are discovered and where school-based supports can be provided. FCPS wants all parents and guardians to know that your school counselor, school psychologist, and school social worker are available for consultation and support on concerns such as anxiety, peer relationships, stress, depression or other social and emotional issues. They can also provide a list of private and community- based mental health resources. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s school to connect with a member of the student services team.  Click on the following links to learn about resources and ways to foster resilience in your child. SCA Spirit Day

Attention Hunt Valley students: The final SCA Spirit day of the year is coming soon!  Our last spirit day of the year will be on Friday, June 1st.  The theme is Hawaiian Summer Luau.  Come to school in your best gear to celebrate the theme, and the fact that summer is right around the corner.  Please remember to wear things that are appropriate and safe for school (including no swim suits).  Talk with your teachers if you have any questions.
Thanks everyone! Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Garretson, and Mrs. Hawkins

FCPS Continuum of AAP Services

Fairfax County Public School offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8.  Learning experiences are designed to develop high-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies.  Teachers, administrators, and the advanced academic resource teacher work together to provide various levels of school based services in each elementary school.

Screening for school-based services can happen at any time during the school year but is done schoolwide in spring to determine services for the next school year.  Parents or guardians may initiate the screening for school-based services by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form to the Hunt Valley Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Mrs. Alt, by Friday, May 25th.

Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels of AAP services including: parent information, CogAt and NNAT scores, SOL scores, work samples, as well as teacher input.

If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Alt by email at:  CMAlt1@fcps.edu or by calling 703-913-8800.
