It was a wonderful week of events – thank you for the Giving Tree, Fiesta Lunch, Beverage Bar, and the countless cards, art and more! Special thank you to the Staff Appreciation Committee and Kristi West, and all the parents and students for making the CRS staff feel so special.

Kindergarteners Celebrate Mother's Day

mother

Kindergarteners celebrated Mother's Day last Friday by honoring their moms with a musical performance,  special cards and handmade hearts, along with muffins and other treats.  Thank you to kindergarten teachers Asta Clark, Barbara Lewis and Christine Ojeda for making this special Mother's Day event such a success.

Learning about Ramadan

ramadan

Second graders learned all about Ramadan from parents Sam'n Iqbal, Sarah Mezban and Faizah Siddiqui.  Thank you for sharing information about all the customs surrounding this holiday with the students.

Second Graders Wow with Musical!

musical

Second grade students performed the musical Matter and Its Properties: The Science of Stuff for the school and their parents on May 9th and 10th.  The students were enthusiastic and excited to teach the audience about solids, liquids and gases and the properties of matter as they sang. Thank you to music specialists Kirsten Boyd and Karen Judkins and the second grade team, Ms. Bamdad, Ms. Betchar, Ms. Finger and Ms. Thatcher, for working with the students on this performance.

Wellness: Benefits of Riding a Bike

bike2
Churchill Road students were greeted by teachers on Bike/Walk to School Day.

Riding a bike is a great way to increase stamina, strength, and aerobic fitness. Cycling uses all the major muscle groups as you pedal and the rider can control the intensity. Riding a bike improves balance, joint mobility, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. Plus, riding a bike is so much fun! There is such joy in coasting down hills after a long uphill climb. Biking can also be a nice alternative to traditional modes of travel and help us to better appreciate our environment.  We are fortunate to have many dedicated bike trails in the area, which can make for an adventurous family outing. Bike rentals can also provide a memorable tour of an area you might visit. Our amazing PE teachers are helping our students to improve their bike riding abilities and to increase their confidence in safe cycling. Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!

Clean Out Your House and
Support Animals in Need!

The 4th Grade Girl Scout Troop is collecting items - old and new - for local animal shelters as part of their Bronze Award project.  Donate towels (old and new), paper towels, gently used pet carriers, old iPads, new pet toys, etc.  This is a perfect opportunity to get some old but gently used items out of the house.  Collection bins will be at CRS from May 14 - 18th and at the Backyard BBQ on May 18th.  We will also be outside PetSmart (8204 Leesburg Pike) on Saturday, May 19th from 12 noon - 5 p.m. collecting items.

Thank you from Girl Scout Troop 6769.

Library Books are Due June 1, 2018

As the end of the school year approaches, we need to collect all of our library materials.  All library books are due on June 1, 2018.  Please help your students locate all outstanding library materials and return them to the library.  You will receive frequent reminders of your child’s overdue books.  All books will be overdue on June 4, 2018.  If you believe your child has returned the book, we are happy to check the shelves.  Lost materials should be reimbursed.  Please send in exact payment in the form of cash, checks made payable to Churchill Road School or pay via “My School Bucks”.  Questions should be directed to Mrs. Warren at sewarren@fpcs.edu.  Thank you for your help!

Cheer Winners of the Week

Churchill Cheer winners are: Owen Bauer (K); Celina Clarke (1st); Rahniya Siddiqui (2nd); Annika Desai (3rd); and Levi Ellis (4th). Our good citizenship winners are Aksel Grote-Kumets (5th) and Jasmine Maples (6th).  Remember, at CRS we follow the four R’s. As outlined by FCPS Regulation 1367.2, school principals shall offer options to nonprofit organizations that want to make their materials available to students and parents. At Churchill Road, non-profit organizations will be permitted to send home flyers in the take home folder 4 times during the year. The dates for the 2017-2018 school year are the weeks of October 2, December 4, March 5 and May 14. These fliers must be related to the school’s educational mission and be age-appropriate. Community organizations must submit their materials in advance to the school’s principal and must include the disclaimer “These materials are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, or this School.” Once approved, the organization will be required to make the copies necessary for distribution. Any questions can be directed to Kim Moran, Churchill Road's Public Relations Liaison.
