Principal's Note
Parents,
Sleepy Hollow Elementary is
the recipient of a 2018 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant in the amount of $4,
985 for the Outdoor Classroom project from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational
Foundation (LCEF). We are super excited to receive these additional funds as we
continue to build on our project!
The mission of LCEF is to
improve the community. They are committed to having a positive impact on the
lives of the customers, neighbors and employees. To help measure the community
impact, we have been asked to submit a report at the conclusion of the project
which will evaluate our success and the effect on our school and community.
One of the requirements of
the grant is to consistently communicate the progress. We are asked to forward
copies of news clips or promotional materials related to the Outdoor Classroom. Digital pictures are requested as well to be published in Lowe’s Social
Responsibility Report.
As you know, we have been
dialoguing and discussing the Outdoor Classroom this entire school year. This
process has been a learning experience for myself and the committee.
A huge Kudos
goes to Jennifer Crotts, SHES alumnus and Instructional Assistant. Mrs. Crotts
was the author of the grant and worked collaboratively with the committee for input
before submitting.
We are patiently waiting for
the installation of the fence for the Outdoor Classroom which is scheduled to
go up after SOL testing. Unfortunately, it looks like our time line of having
our ground breaking ceremony and students planting will be
delayed until the fall. However, we are pleased with the progress we have made this year. We appreciate all of the support
from the PTA and the community.
Thank you, Eric T. Johnson Principal

1st grade students participated in creating their own cars (in a STEAM project) using recycled materials. Once the cars were made, they had to figure out how to get them to move forward..

Glasgow Middle School will be hosting
a FREE Jump Start program for rising 6th graders on August 6-7 and 8-9 to
prepare them for their transition to middle school. This transition program is
designed to both welcome and support 6th graders by assigning them an 8th grade
leader as a mentor during this first year. This 8th grade leader is a
responsible student who was hand selected from a large pool of applicants and
has met the qualifications of being a good role model and a positive leader on
our campus.
Students will get acclimated to their
new school through a variety of activities. 8th grade leaders will guide
students through a series of team-building activities that give students a
chance to meet and interact with their new peers. In addition, students will be
led on a guided tour of the building and classrooms, as well as ask other
important questions they may have before school begins.
Moreover, Jump Start is designed to
alleviate any anxiety and concerns students may have about attending a new
school and get them excited about the opportunities that await them at Glasgow
Middle School. Students can attend one of the two sessions offered this summer.
Session 1 runs August 6th & 7th, and Session 2 runs August 8th & 9th,
both sessions will be from 8:00am – 12:00pm.
