Fourth Graders Learning the Virginia Reel
4th graders in general music are currently
learning the “Virginia Reel,” which is a folk dance that dates back to the 17th
Century. It was performed by early colonists in Virginia in the
1700’s. Students have loved learning what each individual call and step
sequence means. They have especially enjoyed learning how to “reel the
set,” which is the hardest part of the dance. We will perform this dance
for parents on 4th Grade “Virginia Day” which will be taking place
on Thursday, June 7th. We can’t wait to show off all our hard
work and fancy footwork!

6th Graders Visit Kennedy Center
The sixth graders were treated to an exclusive musical
presentation by Orquesta Miguel Faílde at the Kennedy Center celebrating Artes
de Cuba week. The students heard many traditional Cuban songs performed by a
group that had also played for President Barack Obama. After being entertained
at the Millenium Stage, the musicians opened up a question and answer session
just for the Canterbury Woods students.
Upcoming Author Visit - Kate Messner
Award-winning children’s author, Kate Messner, will be visiting
with students in grades 4-6 on Wednesday, June 13th. She will
share her writer’s notebook, research, outlines, character sketches, and
marked-up manuscripts to show how a book evolves from a scribbled idea to a
finished novel. Ms. Messner will be highlighting her new book, Breakout,
which will be released on June 5th; all CWES students have an
opportunity to order a personalized copy of this book as well as some others
that she will sign after the visit. Order forms go home today and are due
back no later than Thursday, May 24th.

Bike/Walk
To School…
Canterbury Woods Elementary is excited to promote National
Walk/Bike to School Day on Friday, May 18th. This is a great opportunity
to start the day off with some healthy exercise right away to stimulate the
mind and body while taking a safe route to school. The support of the
Canterbury Woods community in this initiative would be a huge help!
Please join us as we look to inspire our students to seek more daily exercise!
