Mental Health Awareness Month

May is National Mental Health Awareness month. While the majority of our students thrive and are resilient, all students can struggle at times with emotional and behavioral issues that can affect their learning and overall wellness. Schools are often the place where these kinds of issues, as well as other mental health needs, are discovered and where school-based supports can be provided. FCPS wants all parents and guardians to know that your school psychologist, school social worker, and school counselor are available for consultation and support on concerns such as anxiety, peer relationships, stress, depression or other social and emotional issues. They can also provide a list of private and community-based mental health resources. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s school to connect with a member of the student services team. Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I plan to meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

    • Grace Baker has steadily amped up her efforts in chemistry. She works during class and outside of class to understand the material. She always asks good questions and is so sweet and courteous. It has been such a pleasure knowing her.  Ms. Latha Shankar
    • Jimmy Huynh has been a faithful and consistent contributor to his physics class all year, but especially during the second semester, a careful worker and explicator of difficult points to his classmates.  Mr. George Dewey
    • Sahar Nazary has been working hard in Chemistry. She's been coming in for CT to work on her projects and reviewing materials on her own.  Ms. Catherine Ahn
    • Olivia Newsom has made incredible progress in Biology class! Her efforts are paying off, evidenced by her academic success. She's volunteering more in class and advocating for herself by asking for help when she needs it. Balancing school and sports can be tricky, but Olivia has shown that she can do it all!  Ms. Allison Prell
    • Aru Rajpurohit's consistent efforts have resulted in an increasingly comprehensive understanding in AP Chemistry this year. Her willingness to put in so much time and thought for the sake of learning sets a notable example.  Ms. Ina Koppel
    • Ali Raza has been so conscientious and self-motivated in his efforts to understand chemistry. He has made significant strides in chemistry. He has a pleasant personality and great attitude. We love having Ali in our chemistry class.  Ms. Latha Shankar
    • Ryan Sefchick has shown intense determination over the last few weeks. He's come after school for a half hour nearly every day for the past two weeks, which paid dividends on his most recent Physics quiz. Great job, Ryan!  Mr. Corey Porter

    • Ben Tran is an outstanding Biology student. He is consistently and actively engaged in the classroom. I am so impressed with how quickly Ben learns concepts and thinks critically about connecting prior knowledge with new material. He is also a generous student who freely shares his knowledge with his classmates. I am so happy to have him in my class!  Ms. Erin Chae
