CES Family Bulletin #34

Pic

Dear CES,

First off, I want to say THANK YOU to our amazing PTA! They did a fabulous job making sure the CES staff felt appreciated this week. From the breakfasts to lunches and all of the snacks/surprises in-between it truly was a wonderful week.

I would like to review visitor procedures in relation to school security. All visitors must have a picture ID to be scanned into our new visitor management system. Everyone is required, even familiar parents and regular guests, to scan their ID. Everyone must show ID every time. Please do not hold the door for those entering behind you. In the case of suspicious or unusual behavior, doors are not opened and an administrator or 911 is called immediately.

School design is such that visual observation of all guests occurs at the main public entrance before they can proceed further into the building. By ensuring that the main entrance is visible from the office, natural surveillance of the entrance is achieved. Upon entering the building, all guests must enter the office, sign in, and get a guest sticker which MUST be worn at all times in the building. All visitors must scan their guest badge stickers to sign out prior to exiting the building.

Please know that our number one priority is to ensure the safety of the CES students at all times. We thank you for your patience and assistance with this.

CES' MULTI-SENSORY SPACE

CES is aiming to create a multi-sensory space for students to access during the school day. This sensory space will provide children a location to calm and focus themselves so they can be better prepared for learning and interacting with others throughout the school day. In order to create the space, we need your help. We have created a list of items we are in need of for our mindfulness lab and have written a grant for these items through Donorschoose.org. Please consider donating any amount to help fund our lab. If you use the code RIPPLE when donating, Donors Choose will match your donation up to $50! Thank your in advance for your support!

SOL TESTING IS HERE

Students in grades 3-6 in our school will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests between May 7th and June 8th. It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your child have a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing. The Virginia Department of Education requires students in grades 3-8 across the state to take the SOL tests. SOL tests measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills detailed in the Virginia Standards of Learning. Content areas that will be tested are shown for each grade level below.

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is National Mental Health Awareness month. While the majority of our students thrive and are resilient, all students can struggle at times with emotional and behavioral issues that can affect their learning and overall wellness. Schools are often the place where these kinds of issues, as well as other mental health needs, are discovered and where school-based supports can be provided. FCPS wants all parents and guardians to know that your school psychologist, school social worker, and school counselor are available for consultation and support on concerns such as anxiety, peer relationships, stress, depression or other social and emotional issues. They can also provide a list of private and community-based mental health resources. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s school to connect with a member of the student services team. This week

we learned about LEADERSHIP. So what do we mean when we talk about leadership as a character strength? This strength’s focus is on the personal qualities of leaders, rather than the practice of leadership. These qualities include the ability to understand others and inspire them toward a common goal, the capacity to mitigate conflict and mold consensus, and the desire to lead other people.

This week's character strength example is the San Antonio Spurs' Coach, Gregg Popovich. Coach Popovich personifies our belief at The Positivity Project that, at its core, leadership is a relationship. His style is a robust blend of "total, brutal, between-the-eyes honesty" and the need to "hug ’em and hold ’em". As this excerpt from Daniel Coyle's The Culture Code highlights, "the Spurs don’t succeed because they are good at basketball. They succeed because they are skilled at a far more important sport: building strong relationships."
