Counselors’
Corner
This week’s installment of Zones is about helping your child
identify other coping strategies that may be useful to them. Often times,
children are easily calmed or soothed by coloring/drawing, reading, physical
exercise, listening to music, or talking to a trusted adult. Requesting that
your child take a quiet break to calm their body with any of the strategies
mentioned during this series could be helpful. Sensory bottles have been found
to be a huge hit at school and serve multiple purposes including a break timer
and calming strategy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU1gXEKb90o
The best way to know what strategies calm your child when they are feeling
anxious, sad, upset or angry is to 1. complete an coping skills interest survey
with your child or 2. practice calming strategies in a calm state before
introducing them during an elevated state.
We hope that you have found this series helping in moving towards
students who are able to regulate their emotions appropriately.

Student
Placement Parent Input
As we begin planning for the next school
year, our initial process will focus on class groupings for 2018-2019 school
year. It is very important to have balanced classes that reflect the diversity
of our student population. These decisions are made with input from your
child’s current teachers, school-based counselors and administrators.
We
value your input as we consider the individual needs of our students.
Please tell
us about your child’s learning style, strengths and needs as a learner. It
is also helpful to list characteristics of a teacher that would best match your
student’s needs. If you have multiple children (i.e. twins), please let
us know if they would benefit from being in the same or different classes.
Please note, requests
for specific teachers will not be honored, therefore, we ask
that you do not name
a teacher.
Please submit your requests (with child’s
name and current teacher) in writing to our, Student
Information Assistant, Marivel Hernandez, at mvhernandez@fcps.edu by Friday, June 1, 2018.
We appreciate your support and cooperation in
this process!
