Rocky Run MS News and Updates: 05/11/18

Principal's Note

Dear Rocky Run Families:

It has been a great week FULL of good things at Rocky Run MS. We have enjoyed recognizing Staff Appreciation Week and celebrating the good things our staff does each and every day  Thank you to the RRMS PTA, as well as our students who are a part of NJHS and SCA for the generous lunches and treats they provided for staff throughout this week.  If you would like to share a note of appreciation for a RRMS staff member, please use this link to "Recognize a Ram".  Your notes will be shared with the staff next week.

We have many good things in store for the remainder of May and into June as we anticipate end of the year concerts, awards presentations, field day and iWitness to History Day.  I am excited to attend the Theater field trip to NYC this weekend with students, parents and staff.  We are seeing some great shows including Once On This Island the Broadway version of our own spring musical.

Please feel free to reach out to me with your feedback, questions, and suggestions. I hope to see you at RRMS very soon.

Sincerely,

Amy Goodloe, Ed.D.

Student Services

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

There is a stigma about mental illness, and this stigma shames children, adolescents and adults into silence about their illness, preventing them from seeking help, and causing them to believe mental illness is an inherent weakness in them.  While the majority of our students thrive and are resilient, all students can struggle with emotional and behavioral issues that can affect their learning and overall wellness. FCPS wants all parents and guardians to know that your school psychologist, school social worker, and school counselor are available for consultation and support on concerns such as anxiety, peer relationships, stress, depression or other social and emotional issues. They can also provide a list of private and community-based mental health resources. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's school to connect with a member of the student services team. Click on the following links to learn about resources and ways to foster resilience in your child. Mental Health and Resiliency, Healthy Minds Blog, and Student Wellness: Tips and Strategies.

  • Rising 9th grade students who are considering taking online geometry honors this summer, please be advised, some high schools have closed their Algebra 2 Honors courses.  Prior to enrolling in summer school math courses, please consult your child’s high school about how this summer program will affect their courses next year and beyond.

Course selections for next year.

At this time, parents of rising 8th graders are able to see their student’s course selections in Parent Vue.  We will mail a copy of the course selections to parents of rising 7th graders.  Parents are reminded that June 30 is the deadline to change course requests for next year.  Please email your child’s counselor this year to make changes.

Math placements for rising 7th graders interested in taking Algebra in 7th grade will be finalized in June, after all SOL scores are complete.  Students who meet the qualifications for Algebra in 7th grade (91% IOWA math score, and 500 on the math SOL) will be placed in Algebra 1 and parents will be notified by mail with an opportunity to opt out if they choose.

2017-2018 Yearbook Ordering Information

The deadline for ordering the yearbook is rapidly approaching.  The last day for online sales is May 5th, but with less than 70 books left, they may sell out sooner so don’t delay.

Yearbooks are $40 and can be ordered online at www.yearbookordercenter.com, the school code is 5333.  Not sure if you already ordered a book? Check your student’s grade level Google Classroom to see if they are on the list of yearbook sales.

SOL Testing and FCPSOn Devices

All Rocky Run students will be using their FCPSOn Devices for SOL testing. Please ensure your student’s laptop is working and that they have their power charger and case. Issues should be reported to the School Technology Team located in Room 147.

What to bring on the testing dates:

All students taking an SOL test will need to bring a fully charged laptop, power charger, and case with the exception of students who opted out and use their own device.

Failing to bring in a device on testing days could impact a student's ability to participate in testing on the scheduled SOL testing date.
