Below is the upcoming SOL Schedule for May. Some important things to remember when preparing your Mustangs for SOLs:
¨ Please make sure your student gets a great night’s sleep.
¨ Please ensure your student gets a great breakfast.
¨ Please make sure your student arrives to school on time.
¨ On the day your student is testing, please make sure they do not need to leave early.

Hello Parents!
Our last PTA General Meeting is Thursday, May 10th, at 6:30p.m. Our Kindergarten teachers will be in attendance leading a panel discussion. In addition we will be holding elections for next years’ PTA board. We hope to see you there!
The PTA is requesting donations on Friday, May 11th. Please consider donating a sweet treat to our amazing teachers to show your appreciation for all they do for our Mustangs everyday.
Restaurant Night is Wednesday, May 16th at Subway, 5601 General Washington Dr, Alexandria. We hope to see you there!
Get Ready for Summer!
Stop the “summer slide”
According to Ron Fairchild, CEO, National Summer Learning Association founder “Kids who don’t have educationally rich summers will be nearly three years behind their peers by the time they reach the end of fifth grade.
Much like we would expect an athlete or a musician’s performance to suffer if they didn’t practice regularly, the same thing is true for young people when it comes to reading performance.
Ideas for active summer learning
· Build reading and writing into everyday activities. Reading directions on how to play a game, writing a grocery list and finding items in the grocery store. Reading a recipe aloud and following the steps.
· Encourage writing. Keep a journal or scrapbook
· Read about your world (news articles, Time for Kids, National Geographic.
· Summer projects (read, write and think) build and observe a garden.
· Summer programs at your local library
· Interactive educational websites
Start early to plan to put books and learning experiences in your child’s hands.
It has been a busy month in the art room preparing for our art shows. You should expect to see art coming home over the next few weeks as we take it down. Ceramics will be wrapped and coming home as well (if you did not get it at International Night).
The whole school has started fiber arts lessons on all different levels.
· Kindergarten artists are working on learning to weave a pattern with paper.
· First grade artists are making a 3D house sculpture with a woven roof.
· Second grade artists are finishing up their clay animals and will begin to make a paper weaving with a curved warp.
· Third grade artists have begun their first steps in weaving with yarn.
· Fourth graders are weaving a pouch on a double-sided loom.
· Fifth grade artists are learning advanced weaving techniques such as interlocking, rya knots, and soumak.
Weaving is a great activity that kids can do at home with minimal materials (and it’s generally quiet and peaceful!).

Nuestra ultima reunión general de PTA es el jueves 10 de mayo a las 6:30 p.m. Nuestros maestros de kínder asistirán en una discusión. Además tendremos elecciones para la junta de la PTA del próximo ano. Esperamos verlos ahí!

Detener el “summer slide”
Según Ron Fairchild, CEO, fundador de la Asociación Nacional de Aprendizaje de Verano los niños que no educación en el veranos estarán casi tres años atrás de sus compañeros para cuando lleguen al final del quinto grado.
Al igual que esperaríamos que la actuación de un atleta o un músico sufriera si no practicaran regularmente, lo mismo es cierto para los jóvenes cuando se trata de rendimiento de lectura.
Ideas para el aprendizaje activ0 de verano
· Desarrolle la lectura y la escritura en la actividades de todo los días
· Leer instrucciones sobre como jugar un juego, escribir una lista de compras y encontrar artículos en la tienda para leer.
· Leer una receta en voz alta y seguir los pasos.
· Anime a escribir. Mantenga un diario o un álbum de recortes
· Lea sobre su mundo (artículos de noticas, tiempo para niños, Nacional Geographic.
· Proyectos de verano (leer, escribir y pensar) construyen y observan un jardín.
· Programas de verano en su biblioteca local
· Sitios web educativos interactivos
Comience tempranos para planificar ponga libros y experiencias de aprendizaje en las manos de su hijo/a.
Ha sido un mes ocupado en la sala de arte preparándose para nuestros espectáculos de arte. Deberías esperar ver el arte volver a casa en las próximas semanas mientras lo quitamos. Las cerámicas estarán envueltas y vuelven a casa también (si no las recibió en la noche internacional).
Toda la escuela ha comenzado lecciones de fibra óptica en todos los niveles.
