Dear Fairhill Tiger Families,

We have 30 days left of school and we are focusing on finishing the school year strong! Our end of the year assessments will begin this week and will last through June. All students will be taking the iReady universal screeners in Math and Reading. Our primary students will have their reading fluency, accuracy and comprehension assessed through the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). They will also have the opportunity to show what they know in Math by taking the Math Reading Assessment (MRA). Our upper grade students are prepared and excited to show what they know on the Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments. Please make sure your child gets a good night rest every night and eats breakfast in the morning. If you know your child will be out of school please email the teacher so we can make the necessary arrangements to assess your child on a different day.

April brought the opportunity for our children to shine through our wonderful Arts program. Thank you to everyone who came to our spring music concert. Our students have been working hard on sharpening their instrumental and vocal skills. We also got to show off our wonderful visual artists in our Pyramid Art show before the concert. We really have some talented tigers!

This week is Fairhill staff appreciation week! We really have the best staff around and are looking forward to showering our staff with appreciation this week. Please check your emails from the PTA and Room Parents if you are interested in supporting their efforts this week. Want to show your appreciation in others way? Go to Thank a Teacher VA between now and Friday, May 11th to send a note to the teacher, which also enters them into a contest to win prizes! Additionally, you can always send an FCPS Cares by clicking here.

Bike to School Day is Wednesday, May 9. Riding a bike or walking to school is a great way to start your day. Physical exercise increases blood flow to the brain and helps you think and learn better. By reducing car traffic around the school it also improves the air quality for students and staff members. Not all students live close enough to walk or bike to school but walking to your bus stop is a wonderful idea. If your child is biking, be sure they wear a helmet. Please contact Mr. Peevy if you have any questions.

This is also the time of year that we offer the opportunity for parents to provide input into the class placement process. We will be accepting feedback until Monday, May 28. Please click here to access the parent input form.

Lastly, this Thursday (5/10/18) at 5:30 pm we will be hosting our last Principal Coffee for this school year. We will have a presentation from the Office of Safety and Student Wellness on Social Media safety for our students. The PTA has generously offered to provide childcare during this time. After our coffee, we will be having a PTA meeting to elect our 2018-2019 officers. The following positions are still available:

The roles are:

  • President Elect
  • Website/Social Media Lead
  • After School Program Coordinator
  • Fall Festival Coordinator

Please contact Kelly Schlageter at kschlageter@yahoo.com if you have any further questions about any of the positions.

Warmly,

Candace Hunstad                    Carol Good

Required Immunizations

A message for parents or guardians of current fifth graders:

Sixth grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of the Tdap booster.  Parents or guardians should ask their private healthcare provider, or the health department, to review their child’s immunization record if they are unsure if their child has received the Tdap booster. Students who have received a Tdap booster between the ages of seven and eleven do not need another dose.

•Documentation must be provided to the school student information assistant (SIA) or registrar.  We ask that this documentation be provided to the school before June 8, 2018.  Acceptable documentation can be one of the following:

  1. A copy of your child’s immunization record showing the month, day, and year the Tdap vaccine was given.
  2. A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the month, day, and year the Tdap vaccine was given.
  3. A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption. (A student whose healthcare provider prefers to wait until the student turns 11 to administer the Tdap must provide a temporary medical exemption.)
  4. A notarized Religious Exemption Form, which is available online

Students can receive immunizations required for school at their private healthcare provider or at any Fairfax County Health Department immunization clinic. Information about health department clinic locations and hours can be found on the Fairfax County Health Department website.  Students receiving immunizations at the Health Department must be accompanied by an adult, and should bring their immunization records with them.

More information about immunization requirements and exemptions can be found in the current version of FCPS Regulation 2101 and on the General Registration Requirement section of the FCPS website.

If you have any questions, contact Teresa Gallahan, school health specialist, Department of Special Services, at 571-423-4313 or at tlgallahan@fcps.edu.
