Sports Highlights

Girls Varsity Soccer

The Lady Cavaliers secured first place in the conference with home wins over West Springfield (2 – 0) and Lake Braddock (1 – 0). Against the Spartans, Emily Wiggins gave the Cavaliers the lead in the first half with a blast to the upper left corner from the 18-yard line. Wiggins then sealed the game with less than 2 minutes left with a header off a corner kick from Chloe Dawson. In another rivalry game, the Lake Braddock Bruins were relentless, rarely giving the Cavaliers the space they needed to generate offense. In the second half, off another Dawson corner kick, Bella Hite battled the defenders and back healed a loose ball past the Bruins keeper to give the Cavaliers the boost they needed. Cavaliers keeper Jordan Silkowitz stymied any chances with solid footwork and booming goal kicks in both games.

Boys Varsity Soccer

Woodson Boys Varsity Soccer had a great week! On May 1st, Woodson played West Springfield and won 3-0. Daniel Kang had a hat trick, with assists by George Richard and Andrew Blystone. Will Noecker moved from Center Back to Midfield and made a huge difference in the play of the game. On May 3rd, Woodson played Lake Braddock, and were victorious in a big way, winning 7-1. Still plagued with injuries, Woodson displayed its depth, with all three Sophomores scoring goals. Harrison Tun scored two goals; Luke Schneider and George Richard each scored one. Daniel Kang claimed two goals, and Andrew Blystone scored a fantastic goal! Tadhg Owen’s strong play up front contributed to several of Woodson’s goals. Hiroki Cook, Max Abduhalikov, Andrew Linares-Sejas and JP Seibold gave it their all! With one more Conference game to go, Woodson is at the top of the group with a 7-2-2 record.

Girls Varsity Lacrosse

Woodson ended the regular season strong with an 18-8 win over conference rival Robinson. Robinson scored first while Woodson took some time settling into their offense. On a break-away Margaret Stephan (6G/2TA) got on the board followed by Campbell Brown (2G), Natalie Gates (4G/7DC) and Devin Alsup (2G/4DC). The offense kept pressuring for an 8-3 half-time lead. In the second half Carlie Hartung (3G/1A) scored three and Gates scored two off the draw. Defenders Sydney Andes, Rachel Williams, Maddie Stedham, Sarah Wilson, Annie Reeves and Sabrina Fasold were outstanding in double teaming drivers and shutting down Robinson’s four D1 commits. Logan Dougherty, ranked second in AllMet for assists, had four assists and two take-aways. Cassia Kruse was strong on the circle with three draw-controls and one take-away and Katherine Friedman scored one. Woodson went undefeated in the conference earning a bye in conference playoffs and a spot in Regional playoffs.

Softball

Seven runs in the fourth inning led Woodson past West Springfield 13-4 on Tuesday (5/1). Courtney Farzan, Angel Brown, Sarah Rice, Jenny Riquelme, Grace Conklin, and Mackenzie Williams each drove in runs during the inning. Jhamy Carey was the winning pitcher and surrendered four runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out four. Woodson tallied 12 hits. Rylee Burton, Jacey Carey, Riquelme, and Corinne Burke each managed multiple hits.

Woodson lost to Robinson on Senior Night this Friday (5/4) by a score of 14-3. Woodson did not give up and put up three runs in the sixth inning to end the shutout. Sarah Rice, Jenny Riquelme, and Rylee Burton all contributed in the big inning with RBIs. Riquelme led the Cavaliers with two hits in three at bats. Jhamy Carey took the loss. Before the game, the team celebrated the two seniors, Grace Conklin and Mackenzie Williams.

Woodson Athletic Boosters would like to thank its sponsors Nicely Done Kitchens, Turnpike Basketball, MindWorks, Oh George Tables and Taphouse.
