Haycock Hello
May 4, 2018
On April 21st, four
of our 6th grade Haycock Cougars (Victor VanVranken, Tyler Fontenot,
Hollis Freeman, and Conor Patton) won first place in the Virginia State level
competition held in Richmond, Virginia for the National History Day 2018
competition. Their project under this year’s theme of “Conflict and
Compromise” is centered around the American bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
in order to end WWII. Their entry in the category of junior group exhibit
boards was considered superior by the state level coordinator and is currently
the one nomination that Virginia state is allowed to recommend for display in
the National Museum of American History, in Washington, D.C., during National
History Week. Their exhibit will be on display at the NMAH on June 13th
along with the other single top choices for exhibits from each state.
These four boys will represent the state of Virginia at the National
competition that will be held in College Park, Maryland during the week of June
11th-14th and the awards ceremony on June 14th
will be broadcast and streamed across the nation (a link will be published
later). As they prepare to do their final round of research and
modifications to their exhibit, we wish them the best of luck and want them to
know how proud we are to have these young men represent our school at the
national level!
Congratulations to Haycock’s Sixth Grade Virginia Science
Olympiad Division B State Team! Haycock placed 12th place in the

outdoor activity. Adults and kids are welcome. Sign up if you know you
will be there and also indicate any tools you may bring. Last minute

help cover the entire lunch room. While we are searching for a new Dining
Room Assistant, staff are volunteering their time to assist in the
cafeteria. We are looking for parent volunteers to help in the cafeteria.
Volunteer time slots are available and are in 1 hour blocks. Any
time spent volunteering will be much appreciated! Thank you to the
parents who have been volunteering!

National School Nurse Day is May 9, 2018. It is a day to recognize
the many contributions that school nurses make to student health and learning.
The theme for this year is: School Nurses: Advocates for 21st Century Student
Health.
Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates the role of the Public
Health Nurse (PHN) and the School Health Aide (SHA) for their daily
contribution to the health and welfare of all of our students. The knowledge
and expertise of the school health team are invaluable in addressing the wide
range of health concerns that may affect the student’s ability to learn. Our
PHNs and SHAs take on multiple roles each and every day in their desire to help
all students succeed.
Please join us in thanking the PHNs and SHAs for their hard work
and dedication to the FCPS students.

THANK YOU to Haycock’s Public Health Nurse - Carol McDevitt
AND Haycock’s School Health Aide - Leah Crane
We are now in staffing season. The number of staff members
we are allocated is based upon student enrollment. If you have a child or
know of a family who has a child who will be attending Haycock next school year
and who currently does not attend Haycock, please register your child now.
If a child has been accepted into the AAP program from another
school and the family has notified the AAP Office of the acceptance, there is
no need to notify Haycock. The AAP Office communicates the list of
students who will be attending Haycock from other schools to Haycock.
Click on the link below to fill out the form for rising
kindergarteners. If your child is turning 5 on or before September 30, 2018,
they are eligible for kindergarten. Partial registration paperwork is accepted.
This form is only requested to be completed if you have a rising
kindergartener attending Haycock next school year.

Right now, we want to make sure our school is fully staffed for
next school year. We also want to make sure we are able to have the
smallest class sizes possible. The sooner we know how many students will
be attending Haycock next school year, the sooner we can advocate for more
staff and then hire more teachers.
You are welcome to use the attached New Student Registration Checklist
in order to help you gather the information to register your child at Haycock.
The person who is able to answer all of your registration
questions is Rebecca Wright. She is reached via e-mail at: rlwright@fcps.edu or call the school office
at: 703-531-4002
One of the traditions at Haycock that makes us special is our whole school field trip. This past Wednesday, 988 students and hundreds of staff and parents took over the National Mall. Each grade level was assigned to a different museum and students and adults alike enjoyed learning together.
Thank you to all of the staff and parents who made the whole school field trip a reality. There were hours and hours of planning and work done on the behalf of the staff to make sure this trip was flawless. Many parents were able to serve the school by serving as chaperones on this field trip.
Thank you to everyone for creating another warm memory in the history of Haycock!
