First
Graders Explore the Zoo
Colvin
Run first graders had a blast at our recent visit to the Smithsonian National
Zoo! Students were excited to explore and learn new facts about many of the
animals at the Zoo. We were lucky to be able to witness two new additions to
the Zoo while on our field trip. Spike the Elephant, who joined the elephant
crew on April 27th, and the adorable Baby Gorilla Moke, born on April
17th. We loved taking this trip to help enrich our animal study unit!
Third
Grade Strings Performance Information
The Third Grade strings concert is coming up fast! Be sure to
reserve Thursday, May 24th,
at 2:50pm (in the cafeteria) to come see your child play. This is
a DAYTIME only concert. Third graders should dress in a nice school
outfit: we want to look our best.
The
students will have a full rehearsal before the concert to practice with the
entire orchestra on Tuesday, May 22.
Please help them remember their instrument for the rehearsal. It
may not be their “regular” strings day.
If
you have any questions or concerns please email Mrs. Sisson at crsisson@fcps.edu
An Exciting Week in Fourth
Grade!
The
fourth grade had quite a busy week last week complete with two field trips! The
first was an outing to the Kennedy Center to attend a performance by National
Symphony Orchestra on Tuesday. Their second trip found them traveling to
Richmond on Friday. The NSO performance focused on the music of Leonard
Bernstein, as well as the different instruments of the orchestra. Students were
engaged for the 45 minute concert and were particularly excited when beatboxer
Christylez Bacon made a surprise appearance. He and the lead violist created an
engaging duet: she played her violin, while he beatboxed.
Friday’s trip to
Richmond was a culmination of the Virginia history they have studied all year.
The students visited the capitol building and were able to step inside the
chambers where Virginia’s state laws are made. In addition, the students met a
“civil war soldier” whose presentation gave them with an accurate picture of a
soldier’s life - up to and including the firing of a musket. Both trips made
for an exciting, entertaining, and educational week for the fourth graders!
Fifth Graders Explore Energy
Concepts
Fifth graders reviewed Force and Motion this week in science
classes by discussing Newton’s Three Laws of Motion. They then observed the
concepts in action by building Hot Wheels race car tracks and observing
potential and kinetic energy. Once those cars started rolling down the track,
nothing would stop them other than air, friction or gravity!
Sixth Grade Service Learning at Wolf
Trap
On Wednesday, May 2nd, CRES
sixth-graders continued the tradition of completing their service learning
project at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts. Each year, CRES
sixth-graders learn about stewardship by cleaning up trash and debris in the woods
surrounding our nation’s only national park for the performing arts. Guided by
park rangers, the children worked together to ensure that this national
treasure will look its best for the upcoming season of concerts and musicals.
Our students represented CRES well as they turned work into play while helping
to preserve the beauty of Wolf Trap

Hikers and Runners
Participate in Family Fitness Day
Family Fitness Day 2018 took place at Wolf Trap
National Park for the Performing Arts on Sunday, April 29th, which was National
Park Rx Day. It was a beautiful, cool, and windy morning, but that
didn't bother the hardy runners, walkers, and hikers who showed up for this
amazing day! CRES students and families were welcomed to Wolf Trap by
the Park Rangers and the Friends of Wolf Trap trail guides. CRES students
Carter A., Hannah B., and Elliott B., sang the National Anthem. The
Colvin Run Club coaches, Mrs. Bunch, Mrs. Abernathy, and Ms. Seiler led the
runners in warm-ups before the 5K Run began. A huge congratulations to
the 5K Runners -- it was a very tough, hilly course, but they all completed it
with smiles on their faces! Wolf Trap offered guided trail hikes
throughout the morning as well. Family Fitness Day Chairs, Stephanie
Abraham and Maureen Boyle, would like t extend a huge thank you to Wolf Trap
Park and the Friends of Wolf Trap.
