Update on Justice High School Wolves

Dear Parents/Guardians/Community Members:

We have been very busy the past few months preparing for the new name and mascot: Justice High School Wolves!

We want to provide an update on some of the work we have been doing and also some planning information for the fall.

Mascot:

The selection process for the new mascot began in December 2017 when we solicited suggestions from Stuart HS students, as well as 8th graders from Glasgow MS. After eliminating mascots already represented at other high schools in FCPS and in our athletic conference, 69 choices were presented to the students. Students were asked to vote on their top two choices so we could narrow the options to the top five. In January, we presented the top five to our students which included Falcons, Jayhawks, Lions, Raiders, and Wolves. From there, we narrowed the choices down to the top two. From that vote, we had  two choices left standing; Jayhawks and Wolves. We then asked our students to vote one final time. We were fortunate throughout the process that in each stage, we had over 1,000 students participate.

Logo:

After soliciting input from the students on a design for the logo, we took advantage of the free services of Startte, a company owned by Alison Oleson, an alumna of Stuart HS and community parent. Her graphic designer worked with the Stuart HS administration and activities staff for over 40 hours on design creation, edits, and final files. Athletic and other staff members provided feedback as we worked to articulate our vision for the new logo. The designer finalized the logo and provided us with all of the high quality files that we will need for everything from print, web, apparel, and facilities. Once the logo was finalized, we created excitement over Twitter by revealing the design one snippet at a time.

Here’s a sneak peek at what the gym will look like when they finish the work this summer:

Uniforms:

In addition to facility changes that will take place, we are in the process of ordering new uniforms for the fall sports teams and band members. We look forward to receiving the shipments this summer.

New “Raider Day”:

We will be soliciting suggestions from our students regarding what to call our new “Raider Day”, our annual kickoff event to open the school year. We are also looking for ideas on how to make this new “Raider Day”, and the first for Justice High School, even more special and celebratory. Students will be given the opportunity to provide feedback through a Google form which will be available to them in the next few weeks through Google classroom. Beth Marino, special education resource teacher, has agreed to synthesize the feedback to help inform us on our next steps. Students and parents may also email Ms. Marino directly with any ideas and thoughts (eemarino@fcps.edu). The student kickoff for Justice High School will be held on Friday, August 24, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Preserving School History:

Another area of feedback on which we would love to hear from our students pertains to preserving school history. We want to hear their ideas, questions, and concerns so we can be informed as to how best to move forward. Judy McDermott, English & AVID Teacher and sponsor of the Interact Club, has agreed to be the point of contact. Feedback can be provided by students through the Google form we send to them on Google classroom or directly to her email - JMMcDermottJ@fcps.edu.

Re-Dedication Ceremony:

We are looking for two parents and two students who would like to volunteer to be part of the ceremony committee. This commitment includes being available for regular meetings and taking care of tasks related to the ceremony. The ceremony date is to be determined, but will be sometime in September after the opening of the school year in order to allow us to have a successful opening, focused on getting students in the right classes and having everything set for a new school year. Interested parties may email Penny Gros, Principal, at (pmgros@fcps.edu).

We will continue to provide updates in the coming weeks. We want to express how proud we are of all our students as we begin the transition to a new name for next school year. We have a very strong tradition of embracing our unique and diverse community. We are one and we will continue to be one as the Justice High School Wolves.
