Science Olympiad Competition

The Cooper Science Olympiad team raised the bar for our 5th year in a row. The talented and driven students won another trophy for our school, coming in 4th in the state. Competing in engineering, lab, and testing events, the Cooper team prepared for months --- studying, building, and practicing for their events. The team started in late September with 30 students forming two teams that won the 2nd place overall trophy at the Regional competition. Only 19 students were allowed to compete at the state level, but the team success is due to all of the dedication and learning from all 30 students.

Virginia Vex IQ Competition

Three of Cooper’s 7th graders, David Han, Sophia Lee, and Cynthia Wu, along with four other robotics teammates of Team Rising Phoenix showcased their robots at the 5th USA Science and Engineering Festival held in Washington DC on April 6-8.  The Rising Phoenix, Capital Robotics Team representing the VEX IQ, was the only middle-school /elementary-school students group being invited to this largest STEM festival in the US.  The Rising Phoenix recently won VEX IQ Robotics Virginia State Championship in Feb.

The other Rising Phoenix team members are Matthew Li, Pranav Anumandlahave, Samantha Li, and Daniel Wu.  They have been working together as a team for three years. “My philosophy is not only to teach the kids how to build a robot, but also to provide a platform for them to learn and discover the essential values of cooperation, communication, and commitment while building robots and competing with others”, said head coach Yun Li. The accomplishments of the Team had earned them a ticket to compete in the upcoming 2018 Vex IQ World Competition (Apr. 29 - May 1) with hundreds of other teams from different countries and regions.

Below are a few pictures from the US Science & Engineering Festival.

A message from Alex Hart, Program Manager, Rise Against Hunger National Capital Area....

It is with great pleasure that we announce the destination of the Rise Against Hunger meals you helped package on 2/3/2018. A shipping container, holding 285,120 meals, has been sent to Malawi for our partner Adventist Development and Relief Agency. If you happen to receive more than one of these announcements, your meals have gone to impact multiple partners.

Adventist Development and Relief Agency is an organization that nourishes lives through food assistance and other services in Malawi. To learn more, please visit our partner/country spotlight on the Impact Stories tab and click and drag on our World Aid Map at https://www.riseagainsthunger.org/world-aid/.

Ending hunger is only possible if we continue to grow the movement. We encourage you to share the news about this shipment. Since 2005, volunteers like you have helped us distribute over 310 million meals worldwide. We can end hunger by 2030, but we can't do it without you.

Please visit our website www.riseagainsthunger.org and continue your involvement. Consider making a donation, planning another meal packaging event (at your place of worship, school, company, civic club, etc), joining our advocacy efforts, or even inviting us to speak to a group. Share your experience with us at nationalcapital@riseagainsthunger.org.
