FCPS respects
students’ right to express themselves in the way they dress. It is important,
however, that their appearance is tasteful and appropriate for a K-12 school
setting.
Fairfax County
Public Schools 2017-18 Student Rights and Responsibilities: A Guide for
Families states:
Clothing and
accessories should not:
• Display vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene language or images
• Promote illegal or violent conduct
• Contain threats or gang symbols
• Promote the unlawful use of weapons, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or drug
paraphernalia
• Expose cleavage, private parts, the midriff, or undergarments, and in the
case of pants, the waistband should not fall below the hips
• Contain studs
• Be see-through or sexually provocative
• Include caps or other head coverings unless required for religious or medical
reasons.
FCPS Regulation
2613 states the following:
All students are expected to dress
appropriately for a K-12 educational environment. Any clothing that interferes
with or disrupts the educational environment is unacceptable. Clothing with
language or images that are vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene or clothing that
promotes illegal or violent conduct, such as gang symbols, the unlawful use of weapons,
drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia, or clothing that contains
threats is prohibited. Clothing should fit, be neat and clean, and conform to
standards of safety, good taste, and decency. Clothing that exposes cleavage,
private parts, the midriff, or undergarments, or that is otherwise sexually
provocative is prohibited. Parents or guardians of students requiring
accommodation for religious beliefs, disability, or other good cause should
contact the principal.
At Twain, students who arrive at school dressed
inappropriately will be asked to contact their parents/guardians to bring them a
change of clothing.
