Principal's Message:
I wanted to take a moment to reach out and introduce myself
to the community. Let me first say how incredibly honored and excited I am to
be joining the Oakton staff and community.
I did not apply for this job because I simply wanted to be a principal,
I wanted to be principal of Oakton High School.
Throughout my career in Fairfax County I have been keeping track of what
has been going on at Oakton. It is no
secret that in many ways, Oakton has led Fairfax County in creating meaningful
educational experiences for students. Since
being named principal, I have seen this in action through the Exhibitions of
Learning, AP Capstone presentations, classroom visits and so much more.
To date I have had the privilege of meeting many students and
parents and look forward to meeting many more.
I have been doing a lot of listening and learning in an effort to better
understand the current needs of the school.
I have been asked frequently what I see as the vision for Oakton High
School. While I believe that the principal
has a large role to play in the school, I do not see the vision as something
that I can or should create in isolation.
I will be working with staff, students, and parents to identify the
vision for the future of Oakton High School.
With that input, the staff will work to create the plans to ensure the
vision becomes a reality. What I can
share at this time are my core beliefs.
It is these basic tenets that serve as the backbone of who I am as an
educator.
- All students can learn and achieve at high
levels.
- All students should be highly engaged in their
learning.
- All students should feel connected to and
supported by Oakton High School.
In my effort to increase communication between the school
and the community, I have increased Oakton’s social media presence on Twitter (@OaktonHS)
and Instagram (oaktonhs) to highlight what is going on day-to-day throughout the
building. I am also working on the News
You Choose weekly newsletter to ensure that information is sent out in a timely
and consistent basis. I will be adding a
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) newsletter that will go out on the weekends,
as needed. I will be attending PTSA
meetings and will continue the tradition of being available at 6:30pm for
questions and discussion, prior to the 7:00pm start time. Currently, I am in the process of creating
additional forums for parents to have their voices heard.
I look forward to meeting you and working with you for many
years to come.
Sincerely,
Jamie Lane
Academics/Testing:
Volunteer hours and x2vol
Volunteer hours for the Oakton Seal, the Fairfax County Cord and the Virginia Seal of Excellence MUST be entered into X2VOL by May 18. In addition, the Virginia Seal of Excellence requires a paper application to be completed by the student. The application can be found on the Social Studies web-site. (In lieu of recording the hours on the paper application indicate the hours have been recorded in X2VOL.) The only signatures the student is required to get are the parent and gov’t teacher. The deadline for the paper application AND the electronic hour entry is May 18. Questions and to submit paperwork, contact Mrs. Manilli (jrmanilli@fcps.edu) or Mrs. Lawver (hmlawver@fcps.edu).
AP Proctor Help Needed! – (more information about duties included this week)
We are looking for parent volunteers to help with AP test proctoring! Oakton High School students will take over 3000 AP exams over two weeks in May, and parent support will help administer them smoothly. AP Exams are the weeks of May 7 and May 14.
If you are able to give your time, we ask that you sign up online. As a proctor you will be paired up with at least one of our school counselors during the exam. You will help hand out and collect testing materials, as well as monitor the students who are taking the exam. You may proctor any exam as long as your child is not taking that exam and you are not a teacher or professor in that subject. We will be sending you a link with information regarding proctoring procedure.
Email Alyson Calvello (acalvello@fcps.edu) and Katie Warehime (kjwarehime@fcps.edu) with any questions. Thank you for your help!
Upcoming SOL and AP Tests
Testing season is upon us. SOL testing begins May 7th and will close out May 24th, save for make-ups and retakes. AP Testing also begins on May 7th and will close out May 18th. Students should see their teachers concerning testing times and locations. Specific test assignments are available on the OHS website.
For students taking an SOL: Please report directly to your testing location. AM testing sessions begin at 8:10 am, and PM testing sessions begin at 11:18 am. Leave your backpack, cell phone, and any wearable technology in your locker to avoid disrupting the testing environment. You may, however, bring your own pencil and a book to read that is irrelevant to the SOL test you are taking. Please get a good night’s sleep and eat a good breakfast because you will need to focus and do your best in order to earn required credits for graduation. Don’t hesitate to see your teacher or counselor for advice on how to prepare for the exams. All SOLs are untimed tests, so you may have as much time as you need to complete each part.
For students taking an AP Exam: Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time of your exam so you are ready to start the exam on time. If you are late, you will not be able to sit for the exam or for a makeup. If you miss an exam without an excuse, you will be charged a $15 unused exam fee. Come prepared with any necessary materials you need for the exam, including pencil, pen, and/or calculator. ! Make sure to leave anything else – including your cell phone! – in your locker or at home. You cannot bring it into the testing room. Make sure to get a good night’s rest before the exam. Your teacher can help guide you with what is necessary for each specific exam. Please see your counselor if you have any questions about AP testing.

Sports PPE for next year – Registration Now Open!
Information also available online.
Registration is now open! To register for a PPE, go to: https://www.fcps.edu/athletic.preparticipation.screenings and follow the links for sports physicals.
In preparation for next school year, to participate in sports next school year, your child must have a physical on file dated on or after May 1, 2018, on the new form (Revised February 2017). This includes working out in the weight room, conditioning, “green days” and try outs.
The Oakton High School Athletic Training Program is offering an opportunity for students to receive a sports health screening and pre-participation physical (PPE) on Monday May 14, 2018 from 5:30-8 pm. Our team physicians, as well as a staff of nurses, physical therapists and certified athletic trainers will be on hand to provide a thorough screening. If during the screening or physical, the physicians find something that is questionable to them regarding your child’s health, they may request further evaluation by another physician. We are asking for a minimum donation of $50 in exchange for the PPE. Registration is now open! To register for a PPE, go to: https://www.fcps.edu/athletic.preparticipation.screenings and follow the links for sports physicals. There is also a link for the new form there as well. Walk-ins are also welcome on that evening but we ask for a $60 donation at that time. This physical is good for the entire following school year.
This is the Athletic Training Program’s method of fund raising. All the funds for equipment and supplies are raised at this event. The county provides no funding for any of the supplies or equipment in the athletic training room that is used to take care of our athletes. Your support would be greatly appreciated. You too benefit from this process. Once your child’s VHSL physical form is completed that night, it stays on file at the school, as well as a digital copy is kept on our server, so if you need a copy just email one of the ATCs and we can sent you a copy.
PPE’s are being offered in the same format at every high school in FCPS and are fund raising efforts at those schools as well. If you cannot attend the PPEs at Oakton H.S., there may be another local high school offering the opportunity on a date that may be more convenient for you. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Paul Rupp, MS, ATC at prupp@fcps.edu.
