Weyanoke is a community of over 500 students and 100 faculty and staff. We simply could not exist without the hard, often unseen work of our remarkable office and support staff. They are here every day working behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly. This week we offer our sincere thanks for all they do!
It is time to register your child for kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year.
If your child will be five (5) years old on or before September 30, 2018 (which means your child was born on or before September 30, 2018), then he/she should be enrolled in kindergarten for this coming fall. Weyanoke Elementary School offers a full day kindergarten program.
The required enrollment forms have been sent to your home. They may also be accessed on the web at www.fcps.edu . Scroll to the bottom of the page and then click on “Register Your Child”. You may fill out the forms on-line and print the completed forms. Please bring them with you to register because enrollment cannot be processed over the internet.
If your child needs to have a physical examination or immunizations, please schedule them before you return the forms, if possible. Physicals must be dated after August 24, 2017. Current Head Start/FECEP students are required to have a new physical if the last one is dated before August 24, 2017. Students will not be permitted to attend school until all documentation is complete.
A list of additional documents to bring with you to registration is also enclosed. You must present an original birth certificate and medical records. Your lease must be current and include the manager’s signature as well as your own.
You may bring the information in Monday through Friday between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Appointments are not required, but are recommended.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to call (703) 813-5400 #2. We look forward to meeting you and hope you are excited about the new adventure your child is about to begin.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies (POS). Teachers, administrators, and advanced academic resource teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services in each elementary school:
- Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons, Grades K-6 (Level I) - All students in kindergarten through grade six receive level I services which consist of model lessons that are designed to teach critical and creative thinking skills. The lessons are modeled in all classrooms by AARTs and the thinking strategies are then used throughout the year by classroom teachers and other teachers who work with students. Student responses to these model lessons are used as part of the identification process for AAP services. Parents may also practice the thinking strategies during family conversations and activities. A description of the nine critical and creative thinking strategies can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/advanced-academics/critical-and-creative-thinking.
- Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II) - The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenge through lessons and resources that extend and enrich the POS. Level II services are part of a talent development pool. Students are rescreened annually to make decisions about the need for this level of service.
- Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III) - Students identified by a local school screening committee for part-time advanced academic services are challenged through models and strategies designed to extend and enrich the POS in the four core subject areas. Students receive direct instruction from the AART at the local school using curriculum from the AAP Curriculum and Resources to Support the Differentiated Framework. Students identified for Level III services continue to receive level III services through grade 6.
Screening for school-based services can happen at any time during the school year but is done schoolwide in spring to determine services for the next school year. Parents or guardians may initiate the screening for school-based (level II and III) services by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form (available at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/elementary-school/current-fcps at the bottom of the page in Forms) to the AART at Weyanoke Elementary prior to spring screening by April 27, 2018. Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels of AAP services. Parents or guardians who submit a referral will be notified by Weyanoke Elementary of their student’s eligibility status by June 8, 2018.
If a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee. This new information should be submitted to Lorraine Kroll
If you have any questions, please contact Lorraine Kroll.
The PTA will hold a Vendor Fair and Yard Sale on Saturday, April 28 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the school. If you are interested in reserving a space for the sale to sell items, please fill out the form from this week's Wednesday folder or sign up online. Spaces are available for $30 each, or $25 if you are part of the Weyanoke Community. Multiple spaces may be rented. For those not hosting a space at the sale, please come out and support our PTA by shopping at the event!
Selected students in grades 3-5 were referred by their teachers to participate in the Weyanoke After School Program. The program runs every Tuesday and Thursday until May 3rd. Good attendance to this program is crucial. If your child was selected for this program, please ensure he or she attends every session. It is an important tool in helping students improve critical skills.
If yes, he or she may need a booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis). Sixth grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of the Tdap booster. Parents or guardians should ask their private healthcare provider, or the health department, to review their child’s immunization record if they are unsure if their child has received the Tdap booster.
Students who have received a Tdap booster between the ages of seven and eleven do not need another dose. Documentation must be provided to the school student information assistant (SIA) or registrar as soon as possible.
Learn more about the Tdap booster.
Later this school year, students in grades 3 through 5 will be participating in the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. Fairfax County Public Schools has a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy that
encourages students to use their own personal electronic devices (such as
laptops, tablets, and cell phones) during the school day to enhance learning.
At the same time, FCPS has an obligation to guarantee a secure test environment
during Standards of Learning (SOL) testing.
The Virginia Department of Education requires that schools
restrict student access to cell phones and other personal electronic devices
during SOL tests. These restrictions are designed to maintain test security and
to minimize potential distractions while students are taking tests.
View these tips to help your child avoid SOL testing
issues related to personal electronic devices.
