The Franklin Sherman Flash - Apr. 30

What's Happening in 2nd Grade?

FSES second graders are currently enjoying working in Series Book Clubs.  They have been collecting information on characters, relationships between characters, author’s craft, lessons learned, and much more. The students love sharing their findings and opinions.  Once they finish a book, they can’t wait to get their hands on the next book in the series!  Some of the second graders' favorite series are: Ramona, Time Warp Trio, Flat Stanley, Henry and Mudge, and Ivy & Bean!

Positivity Project News

This week, Franklin Sherman students will be learning about a very important character trait, an appreciation of beauty and/or excellence. Students in all classrooms, from kindergarten through sixth grade, will have the opportunity to discuss this character trait. They will talk about times that they have appreciated beauty and/or excellence. They will also refer to familiar books, quotes, and video clips to find examples. It is our hope that you will bring this focus into your home as well. Ask your children about this trait, or even point out times that you have recognized them showing an appreciation of beauty and/or excellence. By recognizing and appreciating one another’s strengths, students will continue fostering the “Other People Matter” mindset.

Do You Know?

Do you know the importance of good school attendance?

  • Regular school attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level.
  • Chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement even when the absences are "excused" or understandable.
  • Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
  • Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with peer conflicts, or facing some other potentially serious difficulty. Help is available.

Visit https://www.fcps.edu/attendance to find out more.  This website provides information on the importance of good attendance, the academic impact of poor attendance, and resources that are available to parents if their child is struggling with attendance.
