Fort Belvoir Upper (4-6)

Spring is here and excitement is in the air as we continue to have a wonderful year of learning here at Fort Belvoir Upper ES! As always, we greatly appreciate the combined efforts of all as we support our students in successfully meeting the highest of standards set before them!  It is amazing that right after our spring break signs of how far we have come in the school year are present around our school!  Some of you have probably notice that Dr. Jane O’Hara has not been seen around school since we had spring break.  She is recovering from a procedure and will be back with us in a couple of weeks.  In the meantime we have had Mr. Larry Jones (another retired administrator) giving us daily support.  Mr. Jones and I have visited each classrooms these past several weeks and the growth in students has been amazing to see!  We have had the opportunity to see how far students have grown as readers and writers, their ability to work with more complex math problems, and their thinking as scientists and engineers as they explore new concepts and solve problems!

On April 13th our staff and students celebrated Military Youth Month by wearing purple.  Mr. Jones and I visited each class handing out our “Purple Up for Military Kids” bracelets along with a certificate of recognition signed by the superintendent, Dr. Scott Brabrand, and myself.  As we handed out the items we looked into each of their eyes and reminded them how much we love and appreciate them!  Please see our wonderful staff picture as we Purple Up for our students!

The Standards of Learning tests for our 4th- 6th grade students are just around the corner.  The students and teachers have worked hard all year and I am confident that the students will do well.  The three week testing window is Tuesday, May 8th – Friday, May 25th.  Make ups and retakes will take place May29th – June 7th.  Please make sure your child is on time to school those days, has plenty of rest at night, and eats a healthy breakfast. All of our students and teachers have worked diligently to prepare your child for this test. We want our students to “show what they know” on those days. Please encourage your child to do their very best. The entire SOL test calendar can be found below.

With the warmer weather, longer hours of daylight and all of the spring extracurricular activities, it is often more difficult to maintain a focus on school.  Continue to monitor nightly reading and review learning journals daily, but also make time for play!

KaBoom- WE MADE THE EAGLE!

Fort Belvoir Elementary School is the recipient of a KaBoom grant.  The Carmax foundation made this possible.  We received 2 Rigamajig kits that allow for students to be given the opportunity for creative, free play.  In addition to using the building materials during the day for labs in the Makerspace room, these kits will be used in the after-school and summer Kids Lab STEAM programming in primary and upper.  The Garrison Commander, SLOs,  KaBoom and Carmax representatives and members of the community unveiled the grant to a fifth grade class  during the month of the military child. Look for lab sign-up opportunities to work with the Rigamajigs after SOLs.
