Notification of Testing: SOL
Non-Writing Assessments, End-of Course
Your
child will be taking one or more Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course
Tests between May 18, 2018, and June 1, 2018. It is important that your
child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips
or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time
period. It is also important that your child have a good night’s rest and a
healthy breakfast before testing. If you become aware of an unavoidable
conflict that could result in your child missing a testing day, please notify
your child’s school counselor as soon as possible.
The
Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requires all students across the state
to take SOL tests if they are enrolled in courses where there is an EOC test. SOL
tests measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills within
the Virginia Standards of Learning. Students enrolled in the following courses
will be tested: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science,
English 11 (or equivalent), Geometry, Virginia and United States History, World
History 1 and World History 2.
The
purpose of SOL testing is to provide information about student achievement to
the parent, school, school division, and state. In most cases, test scores are
available for parents by the end of the school year. More information about how
and when you will receive your child’s scores will be shared closer to these
dates.
The Virginia Board of Education has approved various “substitute”
tests and set the minimum score that must be achieved for the purpose of
awarding verified credit to students. For more information about substitute tests,
please contact your child’s school counselor.
If
you have questions about SOL testing, please contact your child’s school counselor
or Kathleen Guinee, the Assessment Coach at Woodson(kpguinee@fcps.edu).
For the testing schedule, please refer to the Testing Calendar on the Woodson website: https://woodsonhs.fcps.edu/academics/WTW_Testing_Calendar

Woodson Student Services Awarded RAMP
The Woodson School Counseling program was among five Fairfax
County Public Schools (FCPS) school counseling programs to be awarded with the Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) recognized by the
American School Counselor Association (ASCA) in 2018. Our program successfully
demonstrated how our comprehensive school counseling programs benefit all
students.
The RAMP designation, awarded to schools that align with the criteria set in
the ASCA national model, recognizes schools that are committed to delivering a
comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program and an exemplary
educational environment. School counselors submit evidence of the impact their
program has on support of student achievement, connection to the mission and
goals of the school, use of data to drive decisions, and collaboration with
stakeholders (parents, students, and administrators) to receive input and
evaluate their school counseling program’s effectiveness. RAMP applications are
reviewed once a year by a panel of school counseling professionals and the designation
is held for five years.
Guest speaker, Brie Mathers meets with students to engage in more in-depth discussion after her presentation, "Love the Skin You're In." This was one of the many activities planned for Stress Less, Laugh More week sponsored by Woodson's Student Services Department and Student Leadership.
Woodson students visited Frost MS today for their annual activities fair. Frost 8th graders learned all about athletics and clubs to participate in during their high school years.
 Earth Day Project
On Earth Day, Sunday, April 22nd, over 50
students, faculty and members of the community got together to celebrate the
Earth by planting 18 native trees outside of Woodson's Door 16.
These trees were provided through a
grant provided by Earth Sangha, a local native plant nursery and the event was
organized by members of Woodson's Environmental club.
It was
a beautiful day, and volunteers worked enthusiastically and diligently to
celebrate the Earth by making it a more beautiful, greener place.
Senior Owen Collins and Edison Academy Instructor, Mr. Joseph Wolfe.
SkillsUSA
Congratulations to Woodson Senior, Owen Collins, on his
success in the SkillsUSA competition. Owen competed at the State level at the
Virginia SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference held from April
20-22 in Virginia Beach.
Owen finished in Fifth Place in the state. The
SkillsUSA competition is the culmination of students’ education in a variety of
trades, and recognition at the State level is a significant achievement and an
indication that the student is prepared to enter the workforce.
Owen
represented Edison Academy’s Electrical Construction program where he has been
studying the past two years. Congratulations, Owen!
DECA International Career Development Conference
Four Marketing students traveled to Atlanta, Georgia this
past week to represent Woodson at the DECA International Career
Development Conference. For the 20,000+ DECA attendees, events were held in the
Georgia World Congress Center and the brand new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Woodson students Divya, Grace, Ryan,
and Cooper were four of 245 students from Fairfax County who attended the
conference. These four Cavaliers competed against the top international
qualifiers in their categories from all over the world. Divya earned a
finalist spot in her event, Accounting Applications, placing in the top 20 out
of approximately 200 competitors!
DECA is an Association of Marketing Students that
prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality
and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

Congratulations to Coaches Doug Craig (not pictured), Steven
Treger, Jared Van Acker, and Mike Dougherty with nominating student Sam who
were honored at the FCPS Special Education Conference last Saturday as First
Class Award recipients for their inclusive practices in sports.
Sports Physicals for 2018-2019
Believe it or not, it is time to start planning for the
2018-2019 school year. The first step toward eligibility to participate
in any preseason or afterschool athletic event is to complete a sports physical
on an official VHSL Pre-participation Physical Examination (PPE) form (only
version FEB2017 will be accepted).
The Woodson High School Athletic
Training Department will be offering sports physicals at Woodson High School on
Monday, May 7th. This successfully completed physical will be good for all sports and
out of season practices (green days, yellow days, weight room workouts) for the
2018-2019 school year.
This event is a fundraiser for the Woodson High
School Athletic Training Department and goes to support the athletes at Woodson
High School. The cost of the physical is $50 when you register
online. You can register by following this link: https://www.fcps.edu/node/33735.
We are always looking for medical and non-medical volunteers
to assist us for the event. If you are interested in helping out, please
contact Ms. Fickes @ kfickes@fcps.edu, or
click on the registration link to sign up.
Don’t forget the student and parent concussion education
must also be completed annually!!

2018-2019 Course Registration
We are currently meeting with students to schedule for the
2018-2019 school year. If you have questions or concerns about your
student’s course selections, please contact your child’s
counselor. Opportunities for course changes will be limited next
year.
The deadline
for changes to next year's course selections is Thursday, May 31st. Many
schools have a deadline in March; however, we have extended to the end of
May. Please help us keep that deadline by reviewing your child's course
requests using SIS ParentVUE at https://sisparent.fcps.edu.
Now that we are in the final quarter of the school year, it is
important to recognize that some students get fatigued with the routines of
school, classwork, and homework. If your child did poorly in
the first semester or third quarter and you are concerned whether or not he/she
can still pass a course for the year, communicate as soon as possible with your
child's teacher.
FCPS Cares Program

and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can all
acknowledge the good work of our Woodson staff. https://www.fcps.edu/careers/employee-recognition-programs/fcps-cares-program
