“General Music Teacher Cara
Chaapel from Herndon Elementary School took select 6th grade chorus
students to sing for preschool students at Trinity Presbyterian church across
the street.”
Also, kudos to music teachers Ms. Chaapel, Ms. Blend, Mr. Covington, band teacher Ms. Adams, and all of the performers whose Spring Chorus, Chimes, Band assembly and concert on Wednesday were OUTSTANDING!
21st Annual HES Career Day is this Wednesday, April 25th!
HES Career Day is the brainchild of Herndon Elementary counselor, Ms. Bryant. Thanks to her never ending enthusiasm, networking, and effort, the participant list has grown to 53 varied career areas!!
She has everything from a musician, paleontologist, and even a balloon artist this
year. The students are getting excited and ready, making their briefcases and
planning what they will wear on April 25th.
Please remind your children to dress up (if
they choose) and encourage them to be curious and engage conversations.
This is their time to explore possibilities for their future!

HES made the FCPS News again!
HES hosted our
first “Eco-club” this spring. As
part of the club, we entered the KidsGardening Carton 2 Garden contest, in
which we were challenged to use 100+ milk cartons to create a garden project.
As background...in the fall, HES Garden Grow held a STEM challenge in
which students worked in groups to create models of structures out of paper
straws, tape, paper, string, etc. There was an amazing array of ideas, and one
of our favorites was a simple mushroom-like structure that we felt we could
recreate. This was designed by of one of our 5th
graders. We collected 200 milk cartons
in the cafeteria during lunch to reuse, which our club members
then decorated with colorful duct tape. The
students filled the cartons with soil and planted pea
seeds. We used bamboo to create 3 teepees and added a foam board 'roof' to the
top. The students helped glue
the milk cartons to the roof to spell 'H', 'E', 'S' (see attached images).
Teachers may bring students to the garden to spend time reading in the shade of these green
roof teepees once the weather is warmer. Along with photos and an essay,
part of the contest submission was a video, which one of our Herndon
Middle School volunteers helped us produce.

Earth Day Clean-up: THIS FRIDAY, April 20 at 6:00pm
Team up with the Cub Scouts to clean up the HES hive!
Join Cub Scout Pack 157 during their Spring Fun Meeting for an
all-hands-on-deck spring cleanup of the HES grounds. This is a great way to
earn community service hours for middle and high school students, to show HES
school spirit and hang out with friends.
Don’t forget to wear old clothes and bring gloves!
After the clean-up, the Cub Scout Pack 157 will be setting up a mini
obstacle
course and also be hosting a water bottle rocket derby! Bring an empty 20oz
water bottle to be launched.
