MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge

A group of juniors at Hayfield recently participated in the MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge 2018 and were chosen to advance to the second round.  Only 185 of the 912 teams that submitted viable solution papers were selected to advance to the second round of judging.  This is the first time that Hayfield had a team make the “top” group in judging before.  Congratulations to Jennifer Sheng, David Toomer, Nazamin Azima, Aditi Gupta, and Divya Kranthi.

2018 All-Virginia Concert Band

Three of Hayfield’s students, Serenity Flores (chorus), Devon Gorham (chorus), and David Toomer (orchestra) were selected to be part of the 2018 All-Virginia Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Chorus, and Orchestra.  More information about this can be found here.

Japanese Calligraphy

Japanese Calligraphy

On Friday March 23rd, a Japanese shodo (calligraphy) team, Yahata Chuo High School, visited Hayfield for a performance. They are the champions from the national calligraphy performance competition in Japan, and they performed at the opening ceremony for the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. the following day. During the assembly, Mr. Robert Bernhards, a Japanese calligraphy artist also spoke about Japanese calligraphy.  This was an amazing cultural experience!

Science Fair Competition

State Science Fair Compeition

Hayfield had two projects place in the overalls at the State Science Fair Competition!  The team of Miamar Burgos-Rosario, Sarah Syed and Saijai Supanklang placed third overall for their project “Cyanofertilization: A compariative Analysis of Biological and Environmental Impacts,” and David Toomer won first place, (Grand Prize), for his project, “Augmenting Gaseous Adsorption Capabilities via Nanoporous Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Frameworks (CD-MOF) Synthesized with Alkali Coordinating Ions.”  Both teams will advance on to the International Science Fair Competition that will be held in Pittsburgh, PA, May 13-18th 2019.  Hayfield is extremely proud of David, Miamar, Sarah and Saijai!  They have worked hard all year to accomplish this goal and have represented our school so well.

FBLA Competition

FBLA Competition

Congratulations to Jennifer Nelson, Elizabeth Matthews, and Madison Talbot, they represented Hayfield Secondary in the Northern Virginia Regional FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Competition in March, where they placed 1st - out ranking all the other FCPS high school teams.  Recently, this trio represented the Northern Virginia Region of FBLA in the Management Decision Making contest.  The team competed against 24 teams from across the state of Virginia.  During the 1st round of competition, the team had to complete an objective test to be ranked among the top 10 teams.  After advancing to the 2nd round, the girls completed a 20 minute case study review and a 7 minute presentation to judges to take home the 2nd place state ranking!  The team will compete against other state winners at the National FBLA Leadership conference June 28th - July 1st in Baltimore, MD.
