ENERGY ZONE

While Northern Virginia is still grasping the idea of Spring this year, this season always brings excitement for Food and Nutrition Services. We often get asked the question, “how do you decide what goes on the breakfast/lunch menu?” All items that go on the school nutrition menu must be “student-approved.” We use this time of year to receive student feedback for the next school year. Our nutritionist has been feverishly visiting schools across the county for our “student-approved” menu. We have tested items such as Korean beef, falafel, and breakfast sandwiches.

In addition to student taste and preference, we have meal pattern requirements and financial considerations that must be met. Our hope is that as our program continues to grow we can offer students more of what they like while upholding our commitment to fresh and local.

There are many school-based events to celebrate this spring as well. The Action for Healthy Kids “Every Kid Healthy Week,” (April 23-27) coincides with Earth Day on April 22. Schools are encouraged to celebrate by hosting a family fitness night, health fair or plant a school garden. There are also numerous resources available on the USDA Team Nutrition website.

Fruits and Veggies More Matters gives suggestions on

“5 Fruits and Veggies Kids Can Easily Grow”:

1. Tomatoes (seeds packets)

2. Cucumbers (seeds packets)

3. Carrots (seeds packets)

4. Watermelon

5. Cantaloupe

There are also several tasks children can participate in to help in the garden. With some assistance, children can plant, water, rake, harvest and measure. Research shows that when students grow their food, they are more likely to eat it. As we grow a generation of healthy eaters it is vitally important that students understand where their food comes from and the environmental impacts.

SAVE THE DATE - MUSIC OPEN HOUSE

You are cordially invited to attend a music class with your child! The music open house week invites parents to sing, move, and play with their child in a typical lesson and will give you an opportunity to experience general music here at Island Creek and learn ways to support your child’s music learning at home. This is not a formal performance but rather a glimpse at what we have been learning this year in music.

The music open houses will take place from Monday, April 30th to Friday, May 4th, 2018. Below, you will find a schedule listing your child’s homeroom teacher and the date of their open house. Please be sure to check in with the office before coming to the music classrooms. Mrs. Cuthbertson’s classroom is room 242 on the second floor and Ms. Rigby’s classroom is in the theatre on the first floor.

If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Cuthbertson at ancuthbertso@fcps.edu or Ms. Rigby at lbrigby@fcps.edu.
