Floris Friday Message

Pilot

Dear Families,

We know spring has sprung when Run, Floris, Run opens for the season. Come out to the blacktop at 8:30 AM every Friday, weather permitting, to enjoy some exercise, music and catching up with friends. In addition to the return of Run, Floris, Run, the school was buzzing this week with activities for Career Day, Earth Week, and the 6th grade field trip to the American History Museum.

Career Day was a success once again thanks to our fabulous counselors, Diane Ramia and Sarah deKramer and our wonderful volunteers who came in to speak with our students about their careers. Students in grades 4-6 heard from a United States Air Force officer and F-16 Fighter pilot; principal at Mitre in the Organization and Human Systems Department; therapeutic riding instructor and equine facilitated therapist; lawyer from Conway & Pannell, PLLC; custom builder at Genesys; forensic toxicologist with VA Dept of Forensic Science; technical recruiter at Microsoft; critical systems manager at Sirius XM radio; and an architect.

Grades 1 and 2 heard from Patrick McNamara, Frying Pan Park Manager and learned about careers on the farm. Grade 3 got to hear a presentation from Colonel Mike Schnabel, US Air Force fighter pilot.  Lastly, students in K will hear from Officer Denise Randles, Herndon Police Department on Monday, April 23 at 2 pm. A huge thank you to all of our volunteers who spoke with our students and shared their area of expertise.

Thank you to Sarah deKramer for organizing another wonderful Earth Week. Celebrating Earth Week provided the students the opportunity to learn more about how they can make changes in their everyday lives that can reduce our carbon footprint. Students signed pledges to do more reduce, reuse, recycle or to limit their electronic usage. We closed the week of by wearing black for BLACK OUT Day recognizing our need to do more for our environment.

Have you heard??  Next week is Book Fair Week (April 23 – April 27). Students will have the chance to visit the fair early in the week and bring home their wish list. They will then be provided the opportunity to make their purchases later in the week. All purchases must be completed by 10:00 AM on Friday morning, April 27. Tuesday, April 24, the Book Fair will be open from 5:30PM – 7:30PM for parents to visit.

We hope everyone has an enjoyable and restful weekend!

Sincerely,

Gail Porter, Principal and Dave Gerstner, Assistant Principal

Rising 6th Grader? Immunization Requirement

Will your child be a sixth grader next year?  If so, they most likely will need a booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis). Sixth grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of having had the Tdap booster. Parents or guardians of current fifth graders, please check your child’s immunization records and make arrangements with your doctor for the immunization.  Documentation confirming receipt of the vaccination must be turned into the office.
