3rd Grade CML-National Winners

Each year, Colvin Run Elementary School participates in a math competition provided by the Continental Math League (CML) organization. The competition requires students to apply their analytical reasoning and problem solving skills. This year, we are happy to announce that our 3rd Grade team was ranked as a National winner!  Congratulations to our students and to our 3rd grade teachers!

The following students contributed to the team award by achieving a perfect score on at least one meet: Hridhan B., Alice R., Luke C., Ramkumar B., Nathan L., Felix X., Chris V., Eshaan S., Jason P., Isaac B., Jon L., Mia N., William S., Trent S., Ryan G.

4th Grade Iditarod

The fourth grade enjoyed a visit by Iditarod volunteer, Tracy Morrow and her Siberian Huskies.  She spoke a good deal about the race, the checkpoints, the mushers, and of course, the dogs. The kids were able to see dog harnesses, booties, and tug lines.  They definitely enjoyed meeting her and her dogs as a culminating experience to their integrated Iditarod Language Arts, Math and Science units.

Second Graders are “Goin’ Buggy”!

Congratulations to our 2nd Graders who performed the musical, Goin’ Buggy on April 12. We are simply buzzing and fluttering in the glow of this smashing success!! In true Colvin Run tradition, this event was a team effort between the 2nd grade team (Ms. Canaga, Ms. Edwards, Mrs. Loving, and Ms McIlhenney. and our General Music teachers Dr. Schultz and Mrs. Keller.

Ladybugs, Fireflies, Honeybees, and Caterpillars turned Butterflies, swarmed together to address the inequalities and attitudes that insects face. They brought to our attention that bugs have feelings and are sensitive; if we pay attention they can teach us about the many values of being small and six-legged. So next time you see a ladybug, make a wish and please do not tickle its wing, enjoy the sustainable electric, magical glow of the firefly, make sure that you know the honey that you spread comes from a lot of hard work (it’s a trade secret), and marvel at the unbeatable feat of starting life as a caterpillar and ending up a butterfly!  What a nice way to think about Earth Day!

STEAM Kids

Kindergarten STEAM Kids

Kindergartners took aspects of character education, S.T.E.A.M., and the works of Hanoch Piven to create their very own STEAM Kids character. Students read the book, Let’s Make Faces, by Hanoch Piven before getting information about what a STEAM Kid is. Students were invited to create their very own character by choosing a character shape that they had a strong connection. They then used unique qualities about themselves from their personality to their interests to design their STEAM Kid character to resemble themselves. Check out our STEAM Kids bulletin board in the K-1 pod!

Band Ensemble

District Band Solo and Ensemble Festival

On Saturday, April 14th, we had many band students participate in the festival that was held at Cooper Middle School this year.  Colvin Run students prepared solos and duets over the course of the last four months and performed for a judge that specialized in the student’s particular instrument. All of our students received Superior or Excellent ratings and we would like to congratulate them for their hard work and for representing their school, their families and especially themselves so well!  BRAVO!

Cultrama

Culturama

On the evening of Friday, April 20th, 2018, we hope to fill the cafeteria again to the brim with yummy foods, cultural artifacts, talented acts, and a colorful fashion show.

Culturama works best when we have lots of participation, so we would love for all of our CRES community to be represented! Multiple families and scouting groups can also team up to represent a country, too!

Some ways you can be involved:

Displays- Display a poster, artifacts, pictures, activities, crafts, games or anything that will educate us about your country

Foods - Bring a savory or sweet food dish from your country for our international "tasting" menu

Fashion Show - Dress in traditional clothing from your country to showcase in our cultural fashion show

Talent - Perform a dance, song, talent, martial art, or acrobatic routine for our cultural talent show (be wowed by our diverse and talented CRES students!)

To sign up to showcase a country, click here.  8th-grade volunteers are welcome to help and earn their service hours by clicking here.
