Principal’s Corner
Dear Providence Families, Thanks so much for everyone who was able to join us last
Friday evening for the PTA Fun Fair. The warm weather created a perfect
atmosphere for a spring night out with friends and family. Our PTA leadership
team and both adult and student volunteers worked hard to make it a fun night
for everyone. As the principal of our large school, I am humbled and joyful
when I see the work our school community puts into making our family events a
success. I am often a little giddy from saying hello to so many students,
parents, and family members at these big events, and on behalf of our school, I
say thanks for joining us last week.
We have several other big events in the weeks ahead. Our
staff basketball game against Mosby Woods Elementary School was postponed due to
bad weather last month, so we will try again at Oakton High School on Monday,
April 30. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and game begins at 6:40 p.m. The cost is
$1/person or $5/family. All proceeds go to the Lamb Center in Fairfax. The
Mosby Woods community is well known for coming out in large numbers and making
lots of friendly noise at these games. We would love to match their numbers and
cheer on our teachers, and we can use every voice! Please join us for what
should be a fun evening, and wear your Providence gear if you have it!
On Saturday, May 5, we will hold our annual Service Saturday
in the courtyard from 8:00 a.m. until noon. We invite you to join us as we
plant, prune, and prepare the courtyard for the spring and summer.
We will have started our Standards of Learning assessments
for grades 3-6 by the time we send the next Panther Press. These tests are
important to our school as they will be used to help us make instructional
decisions for students next year. While they are one indicator of how well our
students are learning, they are not reflective of everything we have and will
learn this year. We do take them seriously, however, because they will be one
measure of comparison between our school and others in FCPS and the state.
Please help your child do his or her best by ensuring that he or she is here
every day as we prepare and as we administer the assessments, and by ensuring
that your child has a good night’s sleep and an appropriate breakfast during
the testing window. We will start on May 8, and will have assessments, make
–ups, and retakes through June 7. We appreciate your support.
Thank you for helping our school to be a great place for
students, and for partnering with us to help get everything we can out of our
time together.
Sincerely,
Dan Phillips
Counselor’s Corner
Happy
spring! We are looking forward to our annual Fairfax Pyramid Wellness Week from
April 23-April 27. All of our elementary, middle and high schools will be
participating in activities that promote having a healthy lifestyle to include
exercise, nutrition and stress reduction. Be on the lookout for a calendar with
daily themes.
This
month’s lesson will be geared towards MINDFULNESS to include stress reduction.
Mindfulness is paying attention to our mind, body, and surroundings and
focusing on the present moment. When we are mindful, we notice things early and
can calm ourselves and help reduce our stress level.
Coping with the pressures of school, peers and the SOL’s, every child
experiences his or her own anxieties and feelings of stress. Teach your
children some relaxation techniques to help them manage their daily stresses.

Annual Panther Service
Saturday is Coming Soon! It’s almost that time again to mark your calendar for some
outside gardening fun! On Saturday,
May 5th, students, staff, family and friends are joining forces in the
courtyard for our 6th annual Service Saturday. We begin at
8:30 and will finish by noon. This will be another SUPER OPPORTUNITY for
all students, staff and families to work together and for 6th graders to collect
a few service hours. Projects we will be working on: renewing the
planting bed wood, weeding, planting seeds in the raised vegetable beds and
flower gardens. Some of the tools that you could bring to help support these
jobs are: wheelbarrow, gloves, shovels, and rakes.
Everyone is
invited, come with your parent, and bring a Providence classmate, friends,
relatives, even your neighbor and join in the fun! We hope to see you at
Providence on Saturday morning, May 5th!
