 CONGRATULATIONS SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM!
Longfellow's Science Olympiad team won first place at the State tournament on April 14th at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville by an amazing 91-point victory over the second-place middle school team (68 to 159)!!! The Division B State champions will be representing Virginia at the National Science Olympiad tournament at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado on May 17 – 20th. The team is excited to prepare for the upcoming Nationals tournament with only 4 weeks to go! The 2017-2018 Science Olympiad team includes Vicky C., Emma C., Michael D., Michelle D., Pulak D., Jessica F., Grace G., Evan G., Keira H., Zayya H., Ethan H., Connor H., Pratyush J., Harry K., Kyuree K., Pranav K., Elaine L., Isaac L., Mikhail M., Faraz M., Akshan S., Benoy S., Riley T., Alison W., Andy W., Victoria W., Gabriel W., Kaiden W., Sanne W., and Manda X. We appreciate the dedication of Susan Boomer, teacher sponsor and coach, co-coach Julie Cox, and assistant coaches Cathy Witkop and Vivian Jiang. HERITAGE NIGHT TONIGHT, 4/20 6-9:30!
This amazing LMS community event features international food, talent show and fashion event representing over 50 countries and cultures. Bring your appetite and family for an evening of fun and culture. Students have worked hard to represent their cultures and are eager to share their hard work with our community. Please be mindful that parking is limited at the school and do not park in restricted areas. You may want to carpool. Event is free. However, water and bake sale goods will be for purchase to support the Science Olympiad Team's trip to the National Championship.

Thursday, April 26, 6 to 10 p.m. Eat in or dine out at Cava (1445 Chain Bridge Road, Mclean) on Thursday, April 26 from 6 to 10 pm. Mention this fundraiser to the cashier, and a portion of the proceeds from the meal will go toward supporting the Longfellow PTA.

Thank you to all the parents who have already volunteered to chaperone for the up-coming 7th grade MWEE field trips. Team Polaris, Team Sirius and the Explorer team need 4 to 6 more chaperones to have the proper ratio of adults to students and keep the groups moving among the stations smoothly. HAYCOCK FAMILY 3K FUN RUN
The Haycock Family 3k Fun Run is scheduled at Longfellow Saturday, May 5th. We are looking for Longfellow student volunteers to help out that morning (between 7-10) with various activities (setting up the course, directing runners, handing out water, etc.). IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING STUDENTS TAKING SUMMER SCHOOL CLASSES OUTSIDE OF FCPS
• Earning Credit in Non-FCPS Courses In the Summer (July-August) Per Regulation 2408, students enrolled in FCPS are expected to earn standard credits from FCPS programs. The exceptions for courses completed during the summer are outlined below. Since participation in summer programs is elective and there is an associated cost, students are granted more flexibility in accessing non-FCPS programs. Standard credit for advanced academic courses may only be transferred if the advanced academic course is offered through FCPS summer programs. Middle school students may not take a mathematics course during the summer as their first high school level mathematics course. Students must submit all required forms to their school counselor for prior written approval before enrolling in the course: • IS-158 Request to Earn High School

VIP SUMMER CAMP FOR RISING 7th and 8th GRADERS
This year’s Summer VIP Program will be held at Hughes Middle School and is open to rising 7th and 8th grade students attending Herndon, Hughes, Carson, Cooper and Longfellow Middle School. There is a $50 fee for the duration of the program and transportation will be provided to and from Hughes Middle School. Students will participate in a variety of activities including Basketball, Soccer, STEAM, Theater, STEP Academy, and Cooking Lab. SOL Testing Dates for Longfellow MS: May 15 – Reading 8 May 16 – Reading 7 May 17 – Civics 8 May 18 – Science 8 May 22 – Math – ALL 8th Graders May 23 – Math – 7th grade in Math 7HN, Algebra May 30 – Math 7 Ramadan begins May 15 and goes through June 14 Make-up testing ends on Friday, June 1; additional expedited retakes end on Friday, June 8. Please contact our School Testing Coordinator at mreid@fcps.edu if you would prefer to have your child take their SOLs during the week of May 7 - 11 and not test during Ramadan. Students follow their regular schedule on days when they are not testing.

TJ TRIVIA NIGHT
Do you want to see if you’re smarter than a TJ kid? Do you like food, trivia, and prizes? Then come to TJ Trivia Night! TJ Trivia Night will be held in the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Cafeteria from 4:30 to 6:00 on Friday, May 18th. Teams of up to five members will compete to answer the most trivia questions correctly for honor, glory, and $100 in Amazon gift cards. Question topics can range from geography to sports to current events to pop culture, so be ready for anything! Trivia Night is NOT limited to students—anyone is welcome to compete! If your team would like to compete in Trivia Night, teams can register at the door for $5 per member. Individuals can also register for the same price and form teams the night of. All proceeds will go towards the TJ Student Government Association and the TJ Quizbowl team, one of the top-ranked Quizbowl teams in the nation! Reasons to come: • The first place team will win $100 in Amazon gift cards, with more teams winning other prizes! • Pizza, desserts, drinks, and other concessions will be sold at low prices! • TJ Drama’s Spring Musical, Mary Poppins, starts at 7:00 the same night.
