RCMS Weekly Announcements Week of April 16

Hello Carson Community,

As a staff and faculty, we want to express our sincere thanks and gratitude for the countless number of parents who have volunteered their time, energy, and resources to our school this year.  There are numerous situations throughout the school year where we call upon our families for support.  Time and time again, you answer the call.  Whether it is assisting with making copies for teachers, providing snacks for team events, chaperoning field trips, or sharing expertise from your line of work, your presence makes our school a better place.  We thank each of you for being such a vital part of the life of our school.

1. 20th Anniversary Celebration:  We are looking forward excitedly to commemorating the 20th anniversary of the opening of Rachel Carson Middle School.  We hope your whole family will join us on Friday, April 20, from 4:30-7:00PM.  Along with the RCMS PTA, we have planned a fun and family-friendly evening to include:  five food trucks from which to purchase food, snow cones, face painting, photo booth (bring your own camera), live DJ entertainment, the Carson Wonder Race (sign up here to participate in the Race), (cup)cake walk, and games for the little ones.  You could even win a door prize!  So bring a lawn chair or blanket, and enjoy dinner on the lawn with your family while you catch up with some Carson alumni.

2. Parent Coffee, Wednesday, May 2, at 9:00AM :  Please join us at our next parent coffee to discuss safety and security at our school. There are a variety of security protocols and drills that we conduct to ensure a safe and secure environment for our students and staff. At this coffee, we will provide information on best practices as well as answer any questions from parents.  We hope you will be able to join us.

3. National Junior Honor Society:

8th grade members: All 10 NJHS service hours must be verified in x2VOL by Friday, May 4th at 2:15. Students who do not meet the service hour requirement will not be invited to the medal ceremony. Please contact your team’s liaison if you have questions about your service hours.

7th grade students: NJHS applications will be mailed to eligible 7th grade students in May. The NJHS recognizes students for excellence in Scholarship, Character, Leadership, Citizenship, and Service.  Membership in the society indicates that a student attains, demonstrates, and promotes all of these qualities.  All seventh grade students who have maintained a 3.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in the first three quarters of seventh grade will be invited to complete an application. The 3.5 GPA is calculated by the county office and not at RCMS.  The query used to calculate a 3.5 uses 3.4999.  Any average below the 3.4999 is not considered a 3.5. Please contact your counselor if you have questions about your GPA.

4. RCMS Drama Presentation:  Our Drama Department will present Fiddler on the Roof Jr. on May 3, 4 and 5, at 7:00PM, in the RCMS Lecture Hall.  Ticket sales begin April 17 at https://www.itickets.com/register/new/392244.

5. VIP Summer Camp registration is now open.  Camp dates are July 2-August 2 (no camp on July 4).  This camp is only for rising 7th and 8th grade students who will attend the following middle schools in 2018-2019: Hughes, Herndon, Carson, Longfellow, and Cooper.  Register here.
