Cardinal's Message

1

Dear Cunningham Park Families and Friends,

It’s been a week for the arts!  As a perfect complement to our ongoing celebration of poetry (because April is National Poetry Month), Mrs. Karny and young artists were highlighted in the Madison Pyramid Art Show.  Enjoy photos of their beautiful works in this Cardinal’s Message.

Additionally, Cunningham Park had a record number of students participate in the Thoreau-Kilmer Area Honors Band this week!  Huge congratulations go to Diana Colon, Julia Ngo, Elora Saha, Sarah Bennett, Sydney Hill, Sofia Bennink, Caroline Fennel, Marina Josipovic, Lillian Perkins , Eve Sanford, Jackson Bourdeau, Caleb Weiner, Autumn Giresi, Colton Leimbach, Sofia Marshall, Sierra Rossman, Allison Schumer, and to our amazing band director, Bethany Thomas for a wonderful accomplishment!

From the art room to the band room, Cunningham Park students are rising to meet every challenge, and they represent us well!

Shifting gears, a focus for us is to always maintain close communication with our families.  In an effort to further enhance our process, we are trying a new feature: texting.  Beginning with this newsletter, we are testing the feature in which parents who noted their preferred form of communication is text to send out a link for those parents to access the Cardinal’s Message.  We’d love to hear how you like this new line of communication.  Please email me at KTLe@fcps.edu to let me know what you think.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Katie Le, Principal

Project LIFT: Summer Reading Opportunity

Dear Cunningham Park Families,

The fourth quarter starts next week, and we are in the home stretch of our school year.   We are gearing up  for our summer reading program, LIFT.  Summer reading is the only way to combat summer slide, which is the backward step many students take over the summer if they do not keep their reading muscles working.  We have begun to think ahead to what our readers will be doing over the summer, and I wanted to share a unique opportunity that you have here at Cunningham Park.

Our summer reading program is called LIFT (Literacy is for Tomorrow), and flyers went home in last week’s Friday folders with each student in grades 1-6.  LIFT is an opportunity to have books that are at your child’s reading level, selected by your child at school  with our Reading Specialist, and then shipped to your home over the summer.  There are a total of 6 books included, two each for the months of June, July and August, as well as a reading log and the opportunity to participate in the LIFT summer reading breakfast celebration in the fall.

The sign up sheet for LIFT is at the bottom of this Cardinal's Message.  The deadline to register is April 20th, this coming Friday. Please send in your completed forms with payment if you would like your child to participate, and please consider sponsoring other children if you are able to do so.

Last year we had over 100 students participate, and we saw the benefit to students in our fall testing, summer slide was kept to a minimum for students who participated.  We hope to surpass that number this year!

Sincerely,

Kelly Carper, Reading Specialist
