Robinson Student Ram Blast, Week of April 16, 2018

STUDENT RAM BLAST

Providing students and parents with important updates and reports of events and happenings in the middle school.

Getting to know Robinson . . . .

P is for PILOT:  BACK PACK PILOT:   Quarter 4!

A note to students:

A backpack pilot for quarter 4 is being implemented.  A pilot is a trial run of something new to determine the effectiveness.  We are piloting students being able to carry their backpacks to their classes to see if there is any impact on student performance or a  reduction in tardies  or a reduction in the amount of  lost class time due to requests to go to locker during class to retrieve items.  If you choose, you may carry your backpack to ALL classes,

EXCEPTION:   PHYSICAL EDUCATION:   (you cannot secure your backpack in the locker-rooms due to small size of your issued PE locker-room locker);  assemblies in the Field House/Russell Theater;  testing locations (SOL).

Here are the expectations for MS students carrying their backpacks:

  • Students will house their backpacks in the area of the classroom where each teacher designates as the backpack area or class time storage space.
  • Backpacks will NOT be permitted in PE locker-rooms during school or during after school activity programming, at full school or grade level  assemblies in the Field House or Russell Theater,  in testing standardized/large group testing locations  (SOL).
  • As is our practice now, backpacks will NOT be permitted to be left unattended on top of the lockers, on the lockerbay floor, placed in lost and found, or left outside of a classroom or placed in the  locker-room.
  • Staff will not be responsible for missing items from backpacks.
  • As is our practice now, the best place for personal devices/electronics should be locked in your lockers for safe-keeping.

A note to parents:

As we go through the quarter four trial, please frequently check the weight of your child's backpack to ensure that he/she is not carrying too heavy a load due to excessive or unnecessary items. If they don’t use it, or need it, don’t carry it!

Your student may also need your organizational help if they choose to take advantage of the pilot.  We encourage students to continue to use their lockers to store items and secure personal devices etc. Staff will not be responsible for missing or lost items from backpacks. The best place for electronic/personal devices is locked inside the locker!

spring

SPRING IS HERE

Tips for you and your middle schooler as we begin spring at RMS.

While it can be tempting to simply count down the days until summer break, spring is a prime time to ensure your child has a productive and successful spring semester.

Keep your grades up.
All Students: You still have eleven more weeks left of school and SOL testing is right around the corner.  Consider staying after school to get extra help and work hard to finish out the year strong.

Meet with your counselor.
All Students: If you are struggling and need assistance or resources.  Go see your counselor, school counselors can devise a plan to help you get back on track before it is too late. Be proactive and set up a time to meet with your school counselor.

Reassess your extracurricular involvement.
We have a variety of extracurricular activities after school.  If you have not done so this would be a good time to explore new activities and meet new friends.  Watch GMR for a variety of daily activities, check the daily schedule on Twitter @RobinsonSSNews, or go to the RMS afterschool webpage http://robinson-ms-activities.weebly.com

Ms. Aunon is our afterschool specialist and is available to speak with all students on stage during lunch.

Start test prep for SOL.
SOLs will begin soon. Do your best. Eat a good breakfast! Come prepared.  Get a good night’s rest.  Remember no electronic devices are allowed in testing rooms. Don’t forget to visit the SOL practice site for additional practice tools and test taking tips.  http://www2.fcps.edu/RobinsonSS/testing/testing-ms.html

Plan for the summer.
What are your plans this summer?  Summer is a great time to examine your current school year and determine what you want to do differently next school year.  Set your goals now. Also summer is a good time to explore your city, state, or country. We also have a variety of local camps you may be interested in attending.   Click on the following links to take advantage of the summer learning programs in FCPS.

Student Learning Plan

Find out how Student Learning Plans prepare students for life after high school.

The Student Learning Plan (SLP) is a process for students to plan for the future by exploring college and career options. Students will work with their teachers and school counselor to discover their personal strengths and interests, create goals to help them achieve success, plan for courses that meet high school graduation requirements and prepare for life after high school.

The development of the SLP starts in middle school and is updated regularly as each student’s academic, personal, and career goals change. This plan is created and stored electronically in Family Connection.  Students will use Blackboard 24/7 to access Family Connection.

The SLP is required for all middle school students and for high school students who entered the ninth grade for the first time in or after the 2014-15 school year.

Counselors will be going into classrooms to present this information to 7th graders and  8th graders in April.
