SOL Testing

With State testing right around the corner, we want to give families some resources and strategies to help prepare students for the spring testing season.  All SOL tests will be taken online, except for those students that receive IEP accommodations. Teachers have been using different tools to help students prepare for the online tests.

We know that parents are concerned about the tests and assessments their children will be taking over the next few weeks. While testing can be a bit overwhelming and even intimidating, parents can help by encouraging their child and assisting with the practicing of testing skills. Some students may not perform well on standardized tests simply because they are unfamiliar with the testing format or may feel undue anxiety.

One way that you could help to prepare for the SOL tests and provide practical experience reading actual test items is to use the Virginia Department of Education website. Families should also check their teacher’s Blackboard site for additional links to educational websites. If you have any questions about any test or assessment, please call Mrs. Haroutunian at 703-937-1600.

Parents can help students get ready for the tests by noting the following suggestions:

  • Make sure your child knows it is important to take the test seriously, follow the rules, and do his/her best on the test.
  • Make sure your child has a good night’s rest before taking a test. Most children need 10 hours of sleep to perform their best.
  • Make sure they eat a nutritious and filling breakfast on the morning of the test. This is not the time for a high sugar meal.
  • If a child does not feel well on the date of a scheduled test, please don’t send him/her to school. Make up dates are provided for each test. Students cannot perform their best if they are ill.
  • Remember that a standardized test is just one way to evaluate students’ abilities. Don’t let your child think that a poor test result marks him/her as a failure.

Parents need to realize that when a test is over, it’s over. The results usually won’t be known until a few weeks later.

As families plan trips, vacations or appointments, it is important to keep the SOL test dates in mind. The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests will be from May 7-June 1.

The NVWP Student Summer Institute (SSI) is an enrichment program for rising 5th-12th grade students to write and to share their work with other writers. It is designed for students who enjoy writing and who are willing to help others with their writing. The Institute works with students who wish to improve their own writing skills and develop their own styles.  Of course, since this is a summer camp experience, students can also expect refreshments and fun!

Enjoy the opportunity to write with friends made in previous workshops and summers with a ratio of one teacher to 12 students. We have a high proportion of returning participants!

For more information on the Student Summer Institute, go to http://nvwp.org/youngwriters/ssi/

Early Writers one-week summer camp is an opportunity for students in rising grades 1-4 to spend each morning for a week with trained Northern Virginia Writing Project Teacher Consultants exploring writing and having fun with writing along with reading, listening, and speaking activities.  This camp is geared toward students who like to write and want to participate. English Language Learners are particularly encouraged to sign up.

All participants will experience:

  • lots of daily writing time
  • participation in the full writing process, including revision and publication
  • sharing writing in small groups
  • participation in interest groups
  • honest, thoughtful responses to writing and respect for participants' sensibilities
  • individual conferences with and direct instruction from trained NVWP Teacher Consultants (teacher/student ratio is 1/12)
  • publication party to celebrate student writing
  • opportunities to work with visiting published writers
  • daily snacks and lots of fun!
