Congratulations to our School Resource Officer!
After being a School Resource Officer for just over a year, PFC Officer Steven Randazzo of the West Springfield District Station has been honored with the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)!
During his short time here at Woodson, he has prioritized building relationships with school staff, students and parents through presentations and mentoring. He often does more than what is required, taking additional training to help improve the safety of the school, working with staff to find helpful solutions.

Art students had the opportunity to participate in the graffiti wall on their field trip to ArtJamz Underground Studio in Crystal City on Thursday, April 5th. They also visited the Hirshhorn Museum and ARTECHOUSE in Washington, D.C.
Sports Physicals for 2018-2019
Believe it or not, it is time to start planning for the
2018-2019 school year. The first step toward eligibility to participate
in any preseason or afterschool athletic event is to complete a sports physical
on an official VHSL Pre-participation Physical Examination (PPE) form (only
version FEB2017 will be accepted).
The Woodson High School Athletic
Training Department will be offering sports physicals at Woodson High School on
Monday, May 7th. This successfully completed physical will be good for all sports and
out of season practices (green days, yellow days, weight room workouts) for the
2018-2019 school year.
This event is a fundraiser for the Woodson High
School Athletic Training Department and goes to support the athletes at Woodson
High School. The cost of the physical is $50 when you register
online. You can register by following this link: https://www.fcps.edu/node/33735.
We are always looking for medical and non-medical volunteers
to assist us for the event. If you are interested in helping out, please
contact Ms. Fickes @ kfickes@fcps.edu, or
click on the registration link to sign up.
Don’t forget the student and parent concussion education
must also be completed annually!!

Volunteer Opportunity - WFES STEAM Fair
The Wakefield Forest ES STEAM Fair is in need of high school student volunteers. The fair is taking place on Thursday, April 12th from 6-8pm.
There are many opportunities for volunteering, but they are in most need of Exhibitor Assistants where students will get assigned to an exhibitor and learn about their booth/display/activity and help them run it for the duration of the fair. It is a great way to connect with companies and organizations such as The American Society of Civil Engineers, The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, Northern Virginia Beekeepers Association, The Children's Science Center, George Mason University, Northern Virginia Radio Control, and many others.

Parents helping parents: Healthy Minds Fairfax offers new youth initiative
Parenting
children can be a challenging and demanding endeavor, and one that can feel
especially lonely and anxious when your child is experiencing mental health or
substance use issues. In a world of social media and complex societal issues,
things can feel emotionally overwhelming. At times, parents may not want to
share their thoughts with their own friends of family members, and as a
result, they can feel isolated and that they don’t know where to turn for help.
But
you don’t have to feel alone anymore.
A
service of the Healthy Minds Fairfax
initiative, parents are encouraged to reach out to the new Parent Support Partners (PSP) program
for support, understanding, and connections on how to find and access services
to help children, youth and young adults feel better and do better.
Parent
support partners are people who’ve been there. They’ve faced family challenges
and have come through to the other side and are now ready to give back. PSP
staff are all parents who have received training and are qualitied to offer
education, support and assistance. They provide reliable information that
families can use in decision-making and are familiar with services and
resources that can help families in distress. The PSP is provided at no cost to
families or caregivers.
According
to national statistics, approximately 36,000 children in Fairfax County
communities have a diagnosable mental health condition; including 3,960 with
significant impairment. “There may be many perceived obstacles to getting help
but Healthy Minds Fairfax is creating a pathway to eliminate these barriers,”
said Jim Gillespie, Director of Healthy Minds Fairfax. “We urge parents to
connect with other parents who’ve experienced challenges with their children;
getting help is getting easier thanks to our caring, generous Parent Support
Partners. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.”
You
can call the Family Support Line at 571-458-7310 x103.
Healthy Minds Fairfax is the County’s youth
behavioral health initiative that coordinates a full range of mental health and
substance abuse for families and young people. HMF services and resources
connect Fairfax County Public schools, private treatment providers, and multiple
county agencies such as the Fairfax-Falls Church Community
Services Board (CSB). Since the summer of 2017, Parent Support Partner
services have been provided through a unique public/private partnership
involving Fairfax County, NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Health) of Northern
Virginia, the Virginia Department of Behavioral and Developmental Services
(DBHDS) and the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA).

Investigating Career Opportunities
Investigating Career Opportunities (ICO) is a Career Fair taking place on Wednesday, April

Special Education Conference 2018
The FCPS 2018 Special Education Conference will be held on Saturday, April 21st, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Hayfield Secondary School, 7630 Telegraph Rd, Alexandria, VA 22315.

Prom Dresses
Does
your teen need a prom dress? If so, you're in luck!
Mrs. Sussy Tomer,
Woodson's Parent Liaison, has collected formal dresses to give to
students in need.
Please have your child ask for a pass to stop by Room E108
(across from the attendance office) to pick out a free dress. Mrs. Tomer is in her
office on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00am-1:00pm and on Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 10:30am-2:30pm.
Also, if you have a prom/formal dress or party shoes that you are no longer going to use, please bring them to Ms. Tomer so that she can add it to the collection.
Please contact Mrs. Tomer at setomer@fcps.edu or 703-503-4792 if you have
any questions.
2018-2019 Course Registration
We are currently meeting with students to
schedule for the 2018-2019 school year. If you have questions or
concerns about your student’s course selections, please contact your child’s
counselor. Opportunities for course changes will be limited next year. The deadline for changes to next year's course selections is Thursday, May 31st. Many schools have a deadline in March; however, we have extended to the end of May. Please help us keep that deadline by reviewing your child's course requests using SIS ParentVUE at https://sisparent.fcps.edu.
The
third quarter of the academic year is always interesting. Some
students get fatigued with the routines of school, classwork, and
homework. If your child did poorly in the first semester and you
are concerned whether or not he/she can still pass a course for the year,
communicate with your child's teacher.
 Order Your Yearbook
This is your last chance to save money on the 2017-2018 Woodson yearbook before it is full price. Visit www.yearbookordercenter.com and use code 5278.
