The Exhibition of Learning
Our annual Exhibition of Learning
event is on March 20th and 21st from 8:30 AM to 2:40 PM. We would love to have
you join us!!
All freshman and sophomore students will be presenting during through their
P.E./health period. Students, including upperclassmen, who are not taking
P.E./health will present during their English period. If your child is
presenting and you would like to join us, please ask him/her when the
presentation is! We ask that visitors check in at the main office as usual, and
you do not need to RSVP.
How can I help my freshman or sophomore prepare for the Exhibition of Learning?
The students are preparing for the Exhibition of Learning through their English
classes, but you could help your student to feel more comfortable presenting. Ask
your student what he or she is planning to present. Listen to your students’
planned talking points. Encourage your student to elaborate and add details.
Help him or her anticipate questions that observers may have. Ask to see the
visual component of your student’s presentation. Help him or her plan an
attractive, well organized visual.
We are so excited to see our students’
presentations this year, as always!
Accepting Center Tutor Applications
until June 7, 2018
The Peer Tutoring 1 class is an elective
where Center tutors organize Center events, build leadership skills and give
back to the Oakton community through tutoring. If you are interested in
applying to be in the Peer Tutoring 1 class for the 2018-2019 school year, the
application and teacher recommendation form can be found below.
Application: here (download it and it will be fillable)
Teacher recommendation form: https://goo.gl/forms/brP3uZeOGNa3Jr8L2
New due date: June 7, 2018
Cultural
Festival
On Thursday night, March 22nd,
Oakton High School will present its Annual Cultural Festival. The
students have been working hard to deliver their best performances to our
Oakton community. From dancing to singing, this will showcase not only
the diversity of our student body, but the excellent talent they
exemplify. Performance will start at 6pm in the Auditorium.
JUUL
electronic cigarettes
From the FCPS website: “JUULs with the act of “JUULing” are the latest
version of electronic cigarettes and a fast growing trend among youth. The JUUL
e-cigarette stands apart from others in its clever and often deceiving design which
makes it look just like a typical USB flash drive or charger. The JUUL pen
breaks down into two pieces, the shell and the pod. The shell is the mechanism
by which the vapor is heated and delivered, the pod contains the nicotine and
flavored vapor. Together, the JUUL pen looks just like your average USB flash
drive. It even charges when plugged into a USB socket on your laptop or wall
charger.”

Summer
School Information
Summer
school information is now available here.
There are several different options through FCPS for summer school:
Credit Recovery (this is for students who fail a required class), Online Campus
(online classes with some mandatory in-person meetings), Self-Directed Economics/Personal
Finance, and the Madison High School Program (with limited courses).
For
online campus classes, registration starts April 30th - June 15th and the
classes run June 27th - July 26th. Please check the website for more
details on courses offered and cost.
For
self-directed EPF, there are two summer sessions, and registration for both
sessions start March 12th.
Session
1: May 1st - June 21st
Session
2: July 2nd- August 1st
Please
check the website for more details. This is a popular option, so we
recommend registering sooner than later.
Any
student wishing to enroll in Geometry honors, PE 9 or PE 10 at James Madison
High School, please see your counselor for more information.
Please
note that students do NOT have to enroll in a summer school class. They
can always take a course in the school year for free.
Upcoming
Known Absences
Did
you know that if you have plans to be out before or after spring break, you can
send in your notes now? You can call the attendance line, but for this, notes
are preferable. Thank you for thinking of this now and making the days before
the break less stressful for you and for our office staff. We make every effort
to clear the lines before the robo calls start going out. This is especially
hard to do when so many absences are called in. Making arrangements now is very
helpful! Thank you!

Upcoming PTSA Meeting
Please join us for our next PTSA
meeting on Wednesday, April 4 in the library. Casual conversation with
administrators begins at 6:30 PM, and the official meeting begins at 7 PM.
Everyone is welcome!
Will the PTSA Exist Next Year?
The PTSA does not currently have a
candidate for President for the 2018-19 school year. Under our bylaws, we
cannot exist without one.
When asked, many people say that they don't have the time. The job is not that
time-consuming, especially compared to elementary school PTAs. PTSA meetings
are held once a month. We have two board meetings a year. You do not need to
regularly spend time at the school -- most communication with administrators is
done via e-mail, text, or phone.
When all board positions are filled, the work is spread out and manageable for
everyone.
Not interested in being President? How about Membership Chair? Hospitality
Chair? Secretary? There are many ways to help and we need you!
The PTSA does too much for the school to let it go defunct.
If you have questions or are interested in volunteering, please contact Cathy
at oaktonptsa@gmail.com. You will have the support of current volunteers to
help you transition to your new job, as well as the support and training
offered by the Fairfax County Council of PTAs.

OHS Dance Team Spring Clinic 2018

interested in trying out for a high school dance team or if you just want to
learn some new choreography and dance technique, register for the OHS Dance
Team Spring Clinic. The clinic is open to students from any school in
grades 7-11. Participants will learn dance team style technique, such as
turns, leaps, jumps, and will learn several pieces of choreography in a variety

the OHS library. Coach Rowley will give out tryout information and answer
questions about the team and the tryout process.
OHS Dance Team 2018-19 Tryouts
If you love to
dance and want to be involved in your school, come tryout for the Oakton High
School Dance Team! Tryouts will be held April 17-19 and April 23-26, 2018
for the 2018-19 team selection. Not sure if you have all of the skills for
dance team?? Come to tryouts anyway! You will have the opportunity
to learn skills there, and dancers are often selected based on potential
ability to pick up the needed skills! Go to http://oaktonathletics.org, the Oakton
Activities Office, or see Coach Rowley in the library for a Tryout
Packet. Complete the Pre-Registration
Form here.
Sports PPE for next year
Information also available online.
In preparation for next school year,
to participate in sports next school year, your child must have a physical on
file dated on or after May 1, 2018, on the new form (Revised February 2017).
This includes working out in the weight room, conditioning, “green days” and
try outs.
The Oakton High School Athletic Training Program is offering an opportunity for
students to receive a sports health screening and pre-participation physical
(PPE) on Monday May 14, 2018 from 5:30-8 pm. Our team physicians, as well as a
staff of nurses, physical therapists and certified athletic trainers will be on
hand to provide a thorough screening. If during the screening or physical, the
physicians find something that is questionable to them regarding your child’s
health, they may request further evaluation by another physician. We are asking
for a minimum donation of $50 in exchange for the PPE. Registration is not open
yet, however, to register for a PPE, go to: www.fcps.edu/sports and follow the
links for sports physicals. There is also a link for the new form there as
well. Walk-ins are also welcome on that evening but we ask for a $60 donation
at that time. This physical is good for the entire following school year.
This is the Athletic Training Program’s method of fund raising. All the funds
for equipment and supplies are raised at this event. The county provides no
funding for any of the supplies or equipment in the athletic training room that
is used to take care of our athletes. Your support would be greatly
appreciated. You too benefit from this process. Once your child’s VHSL physical
form is completed that night, it stays on file at the school, as well as a
digital copy is kept on our server, so if you need a copy just email one of the
ATCs and we can sent you a copy.
PPE’s are being offered in the same format at every high school in FCPS and are
fund raising efforts at those schools as well. If you can not attend the PPEs
at Oakton H.S., there may be another local high school offering the opportunity
on a date that may be more convenient for you. If you have any questions or
concerns, contact Paul Rupp, MS, ATC at prupp@fcps.edu.
