April is Math Awareness Month |
Math skills provide students with the foundation for problem
solving and reasoning abilities, as well as, developing logic and critical thinking
skills.
Many times,
children find learning more relevant when it is linked to every day life. Math helps students learn basic life skills such as telling time, valuing money and following a recipe.
Here
are 4 simple and easy strategies you can do to show your child real-world
applications of math concepts.
-
Exercise your body; “mathercise” your
mind! Take in
a Nationals game together and track the statistics of your child’s favorite
player. Then, make comparisons between other players.
-
Grocery shop. Ask your child to calculate the total
bill for weekly grocery store visits and determine how much will be saved with
coupons and sale items.
-
Play strategy games. Check out favorites such
as Mathopoly, Bingo, and Sum Swamp. Play in teams so you can talk about
strategies before playing individually.
-
Incorporate math into family cooking
and baking. Math
measurements are an important aspect to preparing your favorite dishes. Ask your kids to calculate the ingredients and then calculate the
ingredients if you were double the recipe.
