Student Peace Award

Hayfield’s Carmen Mazyck (12th grade), is one of 23 students recognized in Fairfax County Public Schools  for receiving the 2018 Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County.  Ms. Mazyck arranged guest speakers for the Hayfield’s Black Student Union group and organizing a minority student panel.  More information about the other award winners can be found here.

Hayfield's Orchestra

Congratulations to the Hayfield Bravo Orchestra and the Hayfield Advanced Middle School Orchestra for being rated as superior at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association performance assessment. Students are adjudicated by a panel of 3 judges over 7 different musical categories. In addition, the students also received a superior rating in the sight reading portion of the event. Hayfield is so proud of the student’s hard work and dedication throughout this process! Thank you to Hayfield’s awesome sectional teachers who helped us achieve our goals.

Safe Routes to Schools Program

On March 15, 2018, the Foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools announced that a contribution was made from Innovation Health to expand the Safe Routes to Schools programs in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).  Hayfield’s HPE Department will benefit from this initiative.  More information about this program can be found here.

Hayfield JROTC

Hayfield JROTC awarded "Honor Unit with Distinction"

Congratulations to the Hawks JROTC Battalion in scoring a 96 out of 100 during their nationally recognized JROTC Program of Accreditation evaluation.  The evaluation takes place every three years in order for the program to maintain their status as an “Honor Unit with Distinction”.  This is signified by the gold star that Cadets wear on the uniform just above the right chest pocket.  The battalion received special recognition for Drill and Ceremony performance and their “Reading for Meaning” service learning project.  The evaluator stated that “this is one of the best programs they have seen in a while.”  The Cadets truly exemplify duty and servant leader values.

While there is always room for improvement, the evaluators described the Drill and Ceremonies event as “flawless.”  Evaluators also encouraged the unit to get out and compete, knowing that they would win. The evaluator described the battalion’s service learning project as “ambitious” and “truly worthwhile to the community.”   The Cadet Corps has embarked on a lifelong commitment to improving literacy within the Hayfield pyramid and a 10 year mission to track individual literacy rates impacted by the Cadet “Reading for Meaning” mission to local elementary schools.

Special individual recognitions go out to Cadet LTC Drew Falk and Cadet MAJ Allison Karels for their vision and execution of the battalion missions.  Cadet MAJ Cynia Richard, is recognized for championing the entire JPA process since the spring of last year. In addition, the work and coordination of Richard’s tied the entire plan together.  Finally, Cadets Zachary Helton, Ryan Sullivan, Fariha Khaled, and Liam Courtney demonstrated both loyalty and courage while stepping up to help with challenging last minute changes.
