Haycock Hello
March 19, 2018
At Haycock, we build community and strong relationships. Together we develop the social, emotional, and academic potential of the child. With an emphasis on resiliency and twenty-first century skills, we model and foster lifelong learning. Students will grow from challenges and discover their strengths.
As we continue the great work occurring at Haycock this school year and continue to plan for the 2018-2019 school year, relationships with students, staff, and parents are our number one priority when planning.
This weekend Haycock had several Odyssey of the Mind teams compete at Thomas Jefferson High School! The students wrote their own scripts and created their own props and costumes. We are so proud of them!

We apologize if we missed highlighting a team that was at the competition yesterday.
We asked the Office of Safety and Security to conduct a Security Survey at Haycock. Below are the findings:
· The new LED lighting around the school really illuminates the parking lot and building nicely.
· Reminding staff that all doors are to be locked at all times. This includes the doors that go outside the building and the classroom doors. The doors are not to be propped open during school hours.
· There were a few lights not working. Work orders for repairs were sent to FCPS.
· There are gates located behind Haycock that are unsecured and do not have locks, so anyone could enter through the gates during the school day. FCPS says we need to keep the gates locked during the instructional day. We are in the process of ordering chains, locks, and keys. A custodian will lock the gates at 9:20AM and will unlock the gates at 4:05PM. We still want staff to utilize Cougar Woods during the instructional day. A key will be kept in the front office for the gate so staff are still able to utilize Cougar Woods. We realize many families walk through Cougar Woods prior to 4:05PM to come and pick their children up. Parents will have to find an alternative walking path to get to Haycock in order to pick your children up on time because the gate will be unlocked at 4:05PM.
· Haycock is following all FCPS Safety and Security guidelines and practicing the drills they are required to practice.
Thank you Haycock families for clipping Box Tops and sending them in with your child(ren). Due to your Box Top submissions, Haycock has just earned a $909.10 check. Thank you!
Thank you to Jennifer Monken for her work in collecting the Box Tops and submitting them on Haycock's behalf. Ms. Monken does a fantastic job of encouraging students to turn in Box Tops. Thank you!

Dear
Haycock Community,
Thank you so very much for you generosity in donations
for the American Heart Association. Haycock collected $9,708.00 as of
3/12. The final day for making donations ON LINE will be Friday March 16th
at 10 AM. We will be closing out our donations and sending the final
prize order to the American Heart Association Friday 3/16 at 10:30.
The PE
dept would also like to remind Haycock Families of two important procedures:
- If your child is sick or
injured and unable to participate in PE, a note from a parent can excuse your
child if it is for less than two weeks. Any injury/illness that is LONGER than
the FCPS medical form must be completed by your child’s physician.
This form is available from your child’s PE teacher. Unfortunately we
have had several students each day who come to us and say, “We can’t
participate and my parents told me to sit out”. We understand the morning
can be stressful but PLEASE send your child with a note explaining.
- All FCPS students must wear
sneakers to the gym for PE class. The sneakers must have a rubber sole,
tie with shoelaces or Velcro, and must cover the whole foot for support.
During the winter season we have many students unable to participate because
they wear boots to PE.
Thanks
for working in partnership with the PE department so that all of our students can
fully participate.
Haycock Families,
This year’s main fundraiser is the Haycock Boosterthon Fun
Run! It is a 9-day program that kicks
off with a Pep Rally on April 17. Families
will then gather pledges for every lap your child runs (30-35 laps), and we will
celebrate at the Haycock Boosterthon Fun Run on April 26, 2018. Our big goal of raising $45,000 is for:
*Updating and purchasing new technology items such as
laptops and iPads for student use
*Purchasing a digital Haycock marquee
*Purchasing math manipulatives for students to use
*Beautification of the Haycock school grounds
*Pay for professional development opportunities for staff
*Purchase books for the library and for individual classroom
libraries
We asked the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Fun
Run and make it more profitable, easier, and fun.
Students will also experience an amazing character theme, CASTLE
QUEST! an English castle theme all about being brave and living with
character. On their quest to regain Bravemore Castle, students will learn the
“SIX VIRTUES of a TRUE HERO” from a cast of colorful characters.
Donations
will go toward the items listed above and to the entire 9-day experience. So please help our school by reaching out to
sponsors. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer on your student
at the Haycock Boosterthon Fun Run!
Thank
you for your support!
Mr.
Donnelly, Mr. Reeder, and Ms. Boyd
Attending
school regularly helps children feel better about school – and themselves. By
building the habit of regular school attendance in elementary school, kids
learn that going to school on time, every day, is important. In fact, a student
who is 10 minutes late to school each day will miss more than 33 hours of class
time over the entire school year. And a student who attends school 90% of the
time on average from K-12 will miss over a year of accumulated time in the
classroom! This loss of class time affects more than just academics. Research
has demonstrated that it impacts social emotional skills like grit and
perseverance as well.
What
parents can do:
- Maintain
regular bed time and morning routines.
- Talk
to your child about why going to school every day is important unless they are
sick.
- Do
not let your child stay home unless they are truly sick.
- Keep
in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety, not
a reason to stay home.
- If
your child seems reluctant to go to school, we are here to help you and your
child on the path to feeling comfortable at school and excited about learning. Reach out to your child’s teacher or
counselor to begin the process.
Beginning May 8th, Haycock will be administering the Virginia Standards of Learning Assessments in grades 3-6. Make sure your child(ren) is present for the SOL assessment.
Third Grade: May 15 and 16 (Reading), May 24 and 25 (Math)
Fourth Grade: May 10 and 11 (Reading), May 18 (VA Studies), May 30 and 31 (Math)
Fifth Grade: May 9 (Reading), May 17 (Science), May 22 (Math)
Sixth Grade: May 8 (Reading), May 23 (Math)
World Down Syndrome Day is March 21st each year. It is
the 21st day of the 3rd month of the year because it represents the
triplication of the 21st chromosome, resulting in Down Syndrome (Trisomy
21). Down Syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition in the world.
World Down Syndrome Day is a day we celebrate individuals with Down Syndrome and
support inclusion!
On March 21st there are two great ways to celebrate people with Down
Syndrome in our community:
1. Wear blue and yellow to school
2. Buy dinner at
Flippin Pizza (800 W. Broad Street, Falls
Church) between 4-8pm and mention the Down Syndrome Association of
Northern Virginia. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the
DSANV.
Soon we will be in staffing season. The number of staff
members we are allocated is based upon student enrollment. If you have a
child or know of a family who has a child who will be attending Haycock next
school year and who currently does not attend Haycock, please register your
child now.
If a child has been accepted into the AAP program from another
school and the family has notified the AAP Office of the acceptance, there is
no need to notify Haycock. The AAP Office communicates the list of
students who will be attending Haycock from other schools to Haycock.
Click on the link below to fill out the form for rising
kindergarteners. If your child is turning 5 on or before September 30, 2018,
they are eligible for kindergarten. Partial registration paperwork is accepted.
This form is only requested to be completed if you have a rising
kindergartener attending Haycock next school year.

Right now, we want to make sure our school is fully staffed for
next school year. We also want to make sure we are able to have the
smallest class sizes possible. The sooner we know how many students will
be attending Haycock next school year, the sooner we can advocate for more
staff and then hire more teachers.
You are welcome to use the attached New Student Registration
Checklist in order to help you gather the information to register your child at
Haycock.
The person who is able to answer all of your registration
questions is Rebecca Wright. She is reached via e-mail at: rlwright@fcps.edu or call the school office
at: 703-531-4002
