Dear CES Families,
This week, Miss Virginia visited with our students in grades K, 1st, and 2nd to talk about making healthy choices. The students seemed to really enjoy listening and learning from her! Our 5th and 6th grade students met with a representative from the FCPS Office
of Student Safety and Wellness to discuss Internet Safety. The rest of our week was filled with outdoor learning, small group instruction, STEAM lessons, buddy mentoring, #GoodNewsCallsOfTheDay, and fun engaging activities.
The CES teachers are dedicated lifelong learners that are committed to improving their crafts to better support students. One of the approaches we have been learning and implementing is Responsive Classroom or RC. The RC approach is a way of teaching that emphasizes social, emotional, and academic growth in a strong and safe school community. One aspect of RC that can be seen around CES is Morning Meeting. Morning Meetings give students a consistent time and place to explore and practice social skills and to merge social, emotional, and academic learning. Morning Meeting also nurtures empathy by offering students an opportunity to practice taking care of others. The RC Morning Meeting approach is a great time for teachers and students to talk about the Positivity Project character traits.
Café Host
- Do you love children?
- Do you love food?
- Do you love CES?
If you answered yes to these questions, then we have an amazing opportunity for you! We are in need of a second cafeteria host for the remainder of the school year. If you are interested please contact Angie Venetsanos amvenetsanos@fcps.edu.
We continued to learn about social intelligence this week. Social intelligence refers to a person’s
ability to understand and manage interpersonal relationships. It is distinct
from a person’s IQ or “book smarts.” It includes an individual’s ability to
understand, and act on, the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of other
people.
Social intelligence is bolstered when you understand your own strengths
and the strengths of others. It is also integral in effectively leveraging
other strengths -- specifically our next character strength: humor. As
Ellen herself said, "Most
comedy is based on getting a laugh at somebody else's expense. And I find that
that's just a form of bullying in a major way. So I want to be an example that
you can be funny and be kind, and make people laugh without hurting somebody
else's feelings."
Giant A+ Rewards Program
The Giant A+ Rewards program
is coming to an end for the 2017-2018 school year on March 15, 2018. CES has
raised $4,503 to date, which is a tad under last year's earned
sum of $6,500. Money earned from this program goes directly to our technology
purchases: iPads, apps, sound system, and computer updates. If you have not
signed up, we hope that you will, by visiting Giantfood.com/school-rewards. Follow
the prompts to login, or to create your online account. You will need
your 12 digit Giant card number and the School ID: 01853. Let us
finish the last two weeks strong!
PTA Board Positions
The PTA is a vital part of CES' success each school year! Their support enables the students to participate in a wide variety of programs that are unique to CES. At this moment, the PTA needs to fill 4 very important board positions for the 2018-2019 school year. I am confident that if you are interested in stepping up to fill a position, the previous members will provide support and mentorship to ensure your and the PTA's success. Anyone interested in learning more about these positions should contact Tammi Milburn at president@centrevillepta.org.
Available Positions
- President

Reminder: Move Your Clocks Ahead One Hour on
Sunday
This Sunday, March 11, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead
one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be
walking to school or to bus stops in the dark.
Help your child stay safe
by having him or her wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or
add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child
to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run
or dart into the street or cross between parked cars.
