DECA State Competition Results

A group of West Springfield Marketing students competed at the DECA State Leadership Conference this past weekend in Virginia Beach.  DECA competitors compete by taking a 100-question comprehensive marketing and participating in a business role-play with a judge or writing an 11-30 page business plan and presenting it in front of a judge.  There are typically 50-60 students or teams per competitive event, so earning a spot on the DECA stage is a great achievement.  Students who are state finalists will have the opportunity to represent West Springfield and Virginia DECA at Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia.  Congratulations to Kareese Akinloba, Naana Owusu, Sofia Fasciolo, Connor Brooks, Jackson Popeck, Thomas Ballou, Jack Russell, Melinda Yeboah, Ruth Alemayehu, Ford Phillips, Cassandra Chamblee, Thomas Teklu, Sade Cole, Kyle Mittauer, Amanda Hoyle and Amanda Wenklar.

All-Virginia Band Audition Results

The West Springfield Band had seven students that auditioned for the All-Virginia Band on February 24th. We had four students that were selected to participate in the All-Virginia Band event in Richmond on April 5-7. This is the highest honor a music student can achieve in the Commonwealth.  We congratulate Abbigale Baker (tuba), Thomas Heal (clarinet), Kate Herrema (flute), and Amanda Welch (piccolo).

Volleyball

Congratulations to Sydney Trotto who was named to the 1st Team ALL STATE, Class 6 in volleyball!  What a great accomplishment!

HOSA Competition Results

Congratulations to Reggie Payne competed at the HOSA – Future Health Professionals district competition and won 1st place.  He is heading to the state competition in Williamsburg this month to compete with students all over the state.

New Website Coming

On Tuesday, March 13, West Springfield HS will have a new website.  We are excited about the new look and features that are now available and we're sure that you will find it easier to navigate.

If you are not able to find the information you need on our home page, you can use any of the following:

  • Search Function, similar to the way you would look for information on Google,
  • Top Menu, which links to main topics including About, Academics, Activities, Resources, and Contact
  • Full Menu, in the upper left-hand corner of the home page, which shows all the items under the main topics.

Our new site offers several important advantages, including:

  • Displaying on mobile devices, an important feature because so many of you are coming to the site through cell phones,
  • Enabling the easy sharing of content between school and Fairfax County Public Schools (for example, emergency alerts about weather closures etc. from the main site will be promptly displayed on the school site),
  • The ability to translate the site content into 75 different languages,
  • Making navigation of sites easier for parents as children progress through the FCPS schools because all sites will feature similar menus, and
  • Featuring accessibility to all users with disabilities (508 compliant).

The new site comes with a new web address:  https://westspringfieldhs.fcps.edu  This link will go live during the day on March 13th.  The old web address:  http://www2.fcps.edu/westspringfieldhs/ will automatically redirect you to the new site.

We hope you’ll visit the website often and stay involved!

Food for Neighbors - Red Bag Program

Food for Neighbors is an all-volunteer organization committed to helping local teens struggling with hunger. To date we have collected and distributed nearly 20,000 pounds of food. We currently help feed over 650 students at 9 area middle and high schools. The first bag pick up at Irving Middle resulted in over 200 bags being picked up which provided over 2,000 pounds of food for our students!

With your support, we can reach even more students in need. Participation is as simple as filling a Food for Neighbors Red Bag once every other month and putting it on your porch on our pick up days. We deliver the bag to you, a desired food list, and pick-up date reminder texts. The next Red Bag food pick up is on Saturday, March 3! Please register as a Red Bag Donor today at: https://www.foodforneighbors.org/red-bag-program/ And visit our website to discover more ways to get involved: https://www.foodforneighbors.org/ Thank you so much for your support!

CLASS OF 2019 PARENTS!

The 2018 All Night Graduation Party (ANGP) Committee has working together since Spring 2017 planning and fundraising for our Seniors’ party. CLASS of 2019 ANGP Committee is forming now!

The position of Class of 2019 Jiffy Lube Live (JLL) Chair (summer concert concessions) has been filled by an experienced parent, Tana Bailey who has students in both 2018 & 2019 classes. Trainings required for volunteering and fundraising through JLL will take place in April and May. We are reaching out now to 2019 parents to build the Volunteer list. We had a fun time last summer with many parents volunteering and getting to know each other better through 20 concerts and earning $15,000 towards ANGP for 2018 SEN18RS. This is the most important fundraiser for rising Senior parents to get involved with to get a great start for your ANGP budget.

Please email us @ wshsangp@gmail.com to share your interest in participating.
