March 9, 2018

Hello McNair Families,

I am happy to share that McNair's Chess Team had an outstanding time at the Virginia State competition last weekend! Our Mustangs are the champions again in all three divisions, K-3, K-5 and K-5 blitz  (speed chess).  They also won top ES in K-8 again!

Arnav G. in Ms. Freer's 5th grade class, got top boy in K-5 honors. Christina L. in Ms. Ward's 3rd grade class, got top girl in the state in K-3 division.

Friendly Reminder

Please remember that if you come to McNair's main office to check your student(s) out of school early, you are expected to show either a valid driver's license or other form of picture ID; such as a passport; in order for us to release your student(s) to you. This same rule applies to any individuals listed as your child's emergency contact. If you are unable to provide us a valid picture ID, unfortunately, we will not release a child to you. Following this simple county-mandated expectation will ensure that safety and security of your child(ren).

Book Fair Family Night

This year's Book Fair will take place during the week of March 19th through March 23rd. This year's Family Night will take place on Wednesday, March 21st from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in our school library.

If you are interested in volunteering you time at the Book Fair, please contact Ms. Andrea Carmack at AMCarmack@fcps.edu.

Positivity Project-P2

For the past two weeks we have explored social intelligence. This has been a very eye opening experience for many of our students; defining it and beginning to recognize it in themselves. Starting Monday, P2 will learn about zest and enthusiasm. This is the ability to bring life and excitement to different situations. It often leads to a higher level of involvement and engagement both for individuals and for groups.  Those who demonstrate zest and enthusiasm bring an energy and intensity to individual and group work. Next week be sure to ask your child what they learned about zest and enthusiasm.

Donations Needed

For our next school wide-performance task, students will be designing and building robots to solve a problem that someone might have at school. In order to do this, we are asking students to bring in the following recyclable materials to use:

- Toilet paper

- Wrapping paper rolls

- Yogurt cups

- Plastic bottles

- Milk gallons or cartons

- Construction paper

- Shoe boxes

- Small Amazon boxes

- Disposable water bottles

No glass or cans, please. If your student is bringing in a container that

was used for food, please wash it out with soap ahead of time.

Students will be using these materials on March 21, 2018. Please have

students bring any recyclable items to your student’s classroom before this

date. Thank you for your support!

PTA Announcements

Dear Parents,

We blinked, and somehow it’s time to put the clocks an hour ahead this coming Saturday.  Instead of snow-day forecasts, there are daffodils and forsythia blooming.  It must be time to think about our upcoming PTA events in Spring.

Our PTA meeting is scheduled for March 13th in the cafeteria from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. Light refreshments and free babysitting will be provided. Ms. Goddin, will be giving updates on: Upcoming spring events, updates about our new school, and discuss safety and security issues including what FCPS/McNair are doing to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
In addition, we are looking to form a three member nominating committee, to nominate PTA officers for the next school year – 2018-2019. If you are interested to be part of this committee, please email presidentmcnairpta@gmail.com
We are also looking for volunteers to lead Bingo Night, scheduled for 04/20, and for Teacher Appreciation Week, if you are interested, please email presidentmcnairpta@gmail.com

McNair Chess Team, did it again!!!
This is our second year in a row winning all three divisions and finishing as the top elementary school in the K-5 division at the Virginia Scholastic Chess Championships, held recently in Roanoke. The PTA is still running the new Box Tops contest. This contest will be running till March 14, so you still have plenty of time to collect your 20 box tops, tape them to the sheet and turn in your entrees. If you submit multiple sheets it will help your chances.
As a reminder: Do not place individual Box Tops in a bag and turn them in for this contest. They must be taped to the sheet.  Make sure they are NOT expired. This time we will be picking 3 winners instead of 7.
All Box Tops are still counted and totaled for each class to go towards the end of year Winning class party. Good Luck to all!

For our After School clubs, please pick up your child at the time indicated in the emails sent to you by the club vendor. There is NO “kiss and ride,” for clubs. You will need to pick up your child from the front door of the school. In addition, due to closings/holidays, we have added extra time to a few of our clubs: Make & Take Robotics - 3:45 to 5:00 pm on Feb 5, 12, 26 and March 5, 12 & 19
Math Olympiad - 3:45 to 5:00 pm on Feb 5, 12, 26 and March 5, 12 & 19
