Dear Families,

In recognition of Black History Month, our librarian, Mrs. Dowling, helped students in grades K-6 celebrate by reading books about the contributions of African Americans as well as studying some of the most influential events in Black History.  The month long unit was introduced as a serious topic where students read about people who had endured unspeakable hardships and pain. The goal was to raise our awareness of the past so we may appreciate the changes that have been, and need to continue being made, in our country. Highlights by grade level:

  • Kindergarteners and first graders learned about Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his wife Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman.  The book The Skin You Live In by Michael Tyler was a favorite of many children.  This book looks at diversity through skin color and uses food as a metaphor for skin colors such as “Your butterscotch gold skin; your lemon tart bold skin; your mountain high apple pie”. Students enjoyed looking at their own skin and deciding which dessert it resembled.
  • 2nd and 3rd graders studied the Underground Railroad by reading the books: The Secret to Freedom, Underground, Unspoken, and Henry’s Freedom Box.  For many of our children, this was a first glimpse into the history of slavery in our country.  Students were asked to think about the quote, “You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right.”
  • 4th and 5th graders focused their learning on the time period during segregation.  They studied the achievements of Louis Armstrong, Wilma Rudolph, Langston Hughes, and Marian Anderson as well as the Greensboro Sit-In.  These topics brought up thoughts and discussions from all students about equality, racism, courage, and hope in the past and today.
  • 6th graders were introduced to Ruby Bridges through her autobiography Through My Eyes.  This was an emotional read aloud that brought Mrs. Dowling and many students to tears.  It gave our young adults an opportunity to see how even children can show strength and dignity during a time of turmoil.

Throughout the year, students have truly loved the idea that our library is an open sanctuary, a haven devoted to “individual intellectual inquiry and contemplation.”

Sincerely,

Gail Porter, Principal and Dave Gerstner, Assistant Principal

Rising 6th Grader? Immunization Requirement

Will your child be a sixth grader next year?  If so, they mostly likely will need a booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis). Sixth grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of having had the Tdap booster. Parents or guardians of current fifth graders, please check your child’s immunization records and make arrangements with your doctor for the immunization.  Documentation confirming receipt of the vaccination must be turned into the office.
