 Glasgow Community -
I hope you all were able to stay safe and warm this weekend with the weather and power outages. Although we had a shortened week due to the weather, there was much happening at Glasgow Middle School.
Student input and reflection resonated as a theme this week. A group of Glasgow students from all grade levels were selected to taste-tested and provided valuable written feedback on breakfast and lunch items FCPS Food and Nutrition Services is considering to add to future menus. Ava Michelman, 6th grader, co-wrote an op-ed article on gun control that was recently published in The Sacramento Bee.
Moreover, Panther of the Month winners were students who consistently demonstrate reflection and give thoughtful consideration to their learning. This month’s winners were Arpan Kc, Denia Zelaya, Ian Ambrossi, Hanin Joubas, Daniel Vasquez Cortez, and Grace Mugaas. Congratulations to all of our winners and nominees!
The highlight for the staff was a visit from Tommy, Kelly, and Jen from The Tommy Show on 94.7 Fresh FM who brought Georgetown Cupcakes for every member of the Glasgow faculty and staff as part of the show’s teacher tour.
It is an exciting time to be a part of the Glasgow community and I look forward to seeing you at the PTA meeting this Tuesday night at 7:00pm! As always, please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely, Shawn P. DeRose Principal

8th Grade Writing SOL - March 12-16 The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Grade 8 Writing Test between March 12 through March 16. It is important that your student attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your child have a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing. If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your child missing a testing day, please notify your student’s counselor as soon as possible.
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requires that all students in Grade 8 take the English: Writing Standards of Learning (SOL) test. The test has two components: multiple choice response and a short paper response. In order to obtain a score, your child must complete both components.
The purpose of SOL testing is to provide information about student achievement to the parent, school, school division, and state. In most cases, test scores are available for parents by the end of the school year. More information about how and when you will receive your student’s scores will be shared closer to these dates.
