CES Family Bulletin #25

Dear CES Families,

March sure has entered like a LION this year! The wind the last two days has been intense. Just like the wind, our students had a powerful week of celebrating Read Across America. We had several spirit days and the students and staff did an amazing job showing their CES spirit! As we move into March, please continue to have conversations with your children about our school pledge that we recite every morning.

As a Centreville Elementary School Student I am responsible for

  • Respecting Myself
  • Respecting Others
  • Respecting Learning
  • Respecting my School

We want to consistently reinforce to our students the importance of working together to make CES the best!

This year, we will hold two kindergarten orientation/registration sessions for the fall 2018-2019 school year. Our goal is to offer times that are convenient to everyone.  The first session will be held on Monday, April 9th at 9:30 am and the second one will be on Tuesday, April 10th at 6:00pm.  There will be a short presentation by Marie Lankford, one of our kindergarten teachers, and Principal Josh Douds.  Parents will be able to pick up a registration packet and sign up for a registration time with the school registrar, Asmaa Tawfik.

The Kindergarten Play Date will be Tuesday, June 5th at 9:30am.  More information will be available at orientation.

If you have any neighbors and/or know anyone who will have a student joining the CES family next year for kindergarten, please share this information with them.

Your Opinions Matter:

Principal Performance Feedback Opportunity

This spring, a random sample of CES parents and guardians will be invited to complete an online feedback form about Principal Douds. This feedback is part of the regular performance evaluation process for principals in Fairfax County Public Schools. Parents and guardians who are selected in the random sample will receive an email or text message with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This online form offers an opportunity to provide anonymous feedback about how Principal Douds demonstrates performance expectations, including instructional leadership, school climate, management (Human Resources and Organization), communication and community relations, and professionalism. Parents and guardians who are not selected as part of the random sample for the official feedback process are still always invited to share views and opinions with our school administrators.

Official online feedback will be collected between March 5 and March 16.  If you receive an email or text message from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the feedback form. Your opinions matter.

We have been learning about social intelligence. Social intelligence refers to a person’s ability to understand and manage interpersonal relationships. It is distinct from a person’s IQ or “book smarts.” It includes an individual’s ability to understand, and act on, the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of other people.

Social intelligence is bolstered when you understand your own strengths and the strengths of others. It is also integral to effectively leveraging other strengths -- specifically our next character strength: humor. As Ellen herself said, "Most comedy is based on getting a laugh at somebody else's expense. And I find that that's just a form of bullying in a major way. So I want to be an example that you can be funny and be kind, and make people laugh without hurting somebody else's feelings."

Giant A+ Rewards Program

The Giant A+ Rewards program is coming to an end for the 2017-2018 school year on March 15, 2018. CES has raised $4,503 to date, which is a tad under last year's earned sum of $6,500. Money earned from this program goes directly to our technology purchases: iPads, apps, sound system, and computer updates. If you have not signed up, we hope that you will, by visiting Giantfood.com/school-rewards. Follow the prompts to login, or to create your online account. You will need your 12 digit Giant card number and the School ID: 01853. Let us finish the last two weeks strong!

PTA Board Positions

The PTA is a vital part of CES' success each school year! Their support enables the students to participate in a wide variety of programs that are unique to CES. At this moment, the PTA needs to fill 4 very important board positions for the 2018-2019 school year. I am confident that if you are interested in stepping up to fill a position, the previous members will provide support and mentorship to ensure your and the PTA's success. Anyone interested in learning more about these positions should contact Tammi Milburn at president@centrevillepta.org

Available Positions
