Principal's Note

eric

Parents,

I am honored to share with you that I was named a finalist for Outstanding New Principal in FCPS. We have five regions in FCPS, and I am representing region 2. Later in the spring, I will be interviewed by the leadership team to determine the winner. This recognition includes the students, teachers, staff and families that make Sleepy Hollow Elementary a special place. This honor is for all of us as we continue to collaborate and work as a team to make sure that our children are receiving a quality education.  I am proud and excited to serve as principal of our great school and look forward to moving us forward in the 21st Century.

Thank you,
Eric T. Johnson
Principal

University Teachers' College in NY

Sleepy Hollow teachers Jessica Brown, Almaz Matta, and Barbara Oswalt traveled with a group of educators from Fairfax County to Columbia University’s Teachers’ College for an event focused on literacy.  With two keynote speakers and four workshops, the day was full of meaningful learning.  Sessions included Writer’s Workshop, Debate, Classroom Libraries, Student Choice in Reading, Learning Environment, Social/Emotional Learning, Biographies . . . all within an environment of teachers from different school districts, states, and teaching environments.  This diverse setting was full of energy and the exchange of ideas was very powerful.  A great day of learning for SHES teachers!

SHES Staff Goes Casual for a Good Cause!

The SHES social committee sponsored a fundraiser to benefit the Stuart Educational Foundation. Since many of Sleepy Hollow’s alumni are Stuart HS grads, we chose this foundation because it  provides scholarships to students in need of tuition assistance as they head off to college. SHES staff were able to wear jeans on a non-dress down day by making a monetary donation. The fundraiser brought in $298 which will be delivered to the foundation.

Music in Our Schools

Happy Music in Our Schools Month! To celebrate this wonderful month of music inclusion, we are hosting another “Bring Your Parent to Music” week! Students in grades K-2 may invite one parent to join us for music class the week of March 19th – 23rd! Come ready to sing, dance, and participate with your child – I promise it will be lots of fun!  Students in grades 3-5 will be competing in a Musical Madness event during general music class. We will set up brackets with the decades from 1900-2010– at the end of the month, we will see which decade the students think is the best! We will also have a few spirit days before Spring Break!!

This year’s theme for Music in Our Schools Month is “music connects us.” Each morning, our news crew will share some music trivia with the entire school. Asking your child about these topics would be a great way to show how music connects school and home! Plus, they’re just great conversations to have with your child(ren)!

Our music program would not be possible without the support from colleagues, families, and administration! J  The music department appreciates you all! Thank you for loving music as much as we do!
