Hughes MS Updates

Principal's Message:

Dear Hughes Parents and Guardians:

Our 8th graders will take their Writing SOL (Standards of Learning) tests the week of March 12th.  Most students will take the multiple choice portion on March 12th and the essay prompt on March 15th.

To prepare for a successful day of testing, please ensure that your student:

  1. Comes to school well rested
  2. Eats breakfast or a snack before the test
  3. Relaxes and takes deep breaths throughout the exam
  4. Limits distractions (such as cell phone use) before the test
  5. Reads the directions and the prompt carefully
  6. Edits their work carefully

Students have been well prepared by their English teachers, and we look forward to seeing their results later in the year when the papers are scored.

Sincerely,

Aimee Monticchio

Principal

It’s All About How You Rebound: March 1st, School-Wide Assembly

The Rebound is a documentary that follows the underdog journey of the Miami Heat Wheels wheelchair basketball team, in their quest for a national championship. Despite a disappointing elimination the year before and the team’s dwindling resources, adaptive athletes rally towards the title while each striving for their own dreams, second chances, and to win against all odds. Thanks to our incredibly generous PTA, LHMS will not only be viewing the documentary through ATL days in Connections on 2/15, 2/22, & 2/23, but The Rebound film crew AND a professional wheelchair basketball athlete will be coming to LHMS on Thursday, March 1st from 9:10-10:30 in the gym. The film crew will share with our students their belief in the opportunity for all to experience the life-changing effects of participating in sport. Additionally, the crew will get select students and staff into wheelchairs to demo some skills. We invite you to attend if you’re available, and we thank you for making this engaging and inspiring school-wide event possible!

School Health Services Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians and school staff members who interact with the school health rooms. This may include principals, school counselors, and main office staff members. The survey has been approved for distribution by the FCPS’ Internal Survey Advisory Committee.

Electronic versions of the survey forms may be accessed at:

Staff Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SHStaff2018

Parent Survey (English): https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FCPSParent2018

Parent Survey (Spanish): https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2018SpanishP

The survey will take less than five minutes to complete and will provide the FCHD with valuable information.  Your participation in this important endeavor is appreciated.

Science Innovation and Inspiration Youth Conference

Project BEST (Building Excitement for Science and Technology) invites Hughes MS students to attend the fifth Science Innovation and Inspiration Youth Conference.

Project BEST is a student-led, non-profit organization dedicated to providing students with education, enrichment, and a joy in learning and understanding the exciting science and technology advances happening around us, founded by students at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in early 2012.

On Saturday, March 17th, the fifth Science Innovation and Inspiration Youth Conference (ScI2YC) will be held at Lanier Middle School in Fairfax, VA. Students will participate in hands-on activities, listen to esteemed guest speakers from the community, and have the opportunity to make connections with one another to develop and grow. The conference will help create and drive students’ curiosity in science, technology, engineering, and math in addition to helping them develop higher level critical thinking skills.

Project BEST is looking for participants who may be enthusiastic about science and technology but have not had the opportunity to pursue their interests or look in-depth into particular fields. Here is a link where your students may register for the conference - https://tinyurl.com/ScI2YC2018

Parents should register their students as soon as possible, since if we reach maximum capacity for the event, any more students will be placed on a waitlist.
